An Assemblage of Projects
Aug 17, 2015 | Asmita Poddar
The department of Computer Science and Engineering is bustling with activity this year. After the whooping on-campus placements that the students of this department had in the academic session 2014-15, the existing students have been inspired to aspire for even more. The department is abuzz with all the projects that the students are undertaking under the guidance of their professors.
Prof. Pankaj K. Sa is working on a project on Person re-identification using feature correspondence in multi-camera network surveillance infrastructure. There are both undergraduate and postgraduate students working on the project. They are working on computer vision, pattern recognition, signal processing and communication. The goal is to efficiently extract useful information from a huge amount of videos collected by surveillance cameras by automatically detecting, tracking and recognizing objects of interest, and understanding and analyzing their activities. In this case, there are two cameras and each matches its feed with the other to accurately identify people based on their attire and other characteristics.
The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) project under the guidance of Prof Pabitra Mohan Khilar aims at building a remote controlled aircraft that can fly autonomously based on pre-programmed flight plans or more complex dynamic automation systems. This is mainly being done by the UG sophomores.
The final year dual degree students are working on recommender systems under Prof. Bidyut K. Patra. These systems store the history of one's activities on the Internet and provide recommendations of what you would like to see when you return to that site, by predicting the 'rating' or 'preference' that a user would give to an item. It has a number of applications such as movies, music, news, books, search queries, social tags, and products in general.
Even though the Computer Science students claim to have some of the least credits in academics among the other branches, the students are remaining pretty busy, with all these projects going on in the department.
Team MM hopes that all the projects will reach a successful conclusion!
