World food day celebrates the creation of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations on October 16, 1945, when people around the world come together to eradicate hunger.

Since 1981, FAO has adopted different themes each year for the World Food Day in order to highlight areas needed for action and provide a common focus. This year the theme is “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the cycle of poverty.” It is in line with the FAO’s new state of food and agriculture report that called for “sustained private and public investments and social protections for the rural poor.” The Department of Food Process Engineering also commemorated this day with full zeal in the seminar hall of the department.

The event kicked off with a short video presentation on Food Day followed by the inaugural speeches by Prof R.K Singh, HOD of Department of Food Process Engineering and Prof P Rath, HOD of Department of Chemical Engineering. The stage was then taken over by Prof S.K Sarangi who delivered an encouraging speech for the nascent crop of foodies and was greeted with great applause. Gracing the event were the guests of honour, Mr Ganesh Prasad Bagaria (MD, Grihasthi Udyog) and Mrs Manju Devi Bagaria (Director, Grihasthi Udyog). The inauguration ceremony ended with the vote of thanks by Prof Sabyasachi Mishra.

Following the inauguration ceremony was the poster presentation competition where students displayed their wit and ideas through colourful pictorial presentation on the theme of Food day. A total of 13 teams, comprising 3-4 members, participated in the competition. A wide range of topics were covered from ‘current research in food’ to ‘food chain crisis’ to ‘world food situation’.

The World Food Day celebration ended with a quiz competition conducted by Sandeep Singh Rana and Kishan Prasad. A total of 7 groups participated in the event with Aishani Sahu, Ashok Nayak, Neh Jawanpuria and Sourav Garg emerging as winners.

The organizers certainly left no stone unturned in spreading social awareness on the occasion of World Food Day. Team MM congratulates the students and the faculty members for their efforts and hopes for many such initiatives to come up in the future.
