Talking about our participation in the Inter-NIT tournament, which was held in the month of November in the previous semester, we reached out to our sports officer Dr P.K. Rout to find out that the Basketball and Kabaddi teams participated in the same. Presenting here is a detailed version of the experiences of both the teams in this tournament.

1.     Kabaddi

As narrated by the boys’ Kabaddi captain, Sreenu Vankudoth the Inter-NIT Tournament 2016, it was held at Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur between 5th – 7th of November. Talking of the initial stages of preparation, the team stumbled quite a lot in the practice session as a cardinal share of time was lost in the preparation of the ground. The practice sessions were initially held in the tennis court beside DTS which had an uneven surface. Kabaddi being more of an aggressive game requires a watered court in order to facilitate the running. After the ground had been set which took 1 hour of the practice session, the remaining 1 hour was used for the practice session. Each of the team members emphasised on their own area and tried to perfect themselves under the guidance of the captain instead of trying to master all the techniques. The strategies of each raider and anti-raider have been transferred to them as a legacy by their previous generations. The team had concentrated on developing their techniques rather than manpower and physique. It being a contact sport and less to do with the strength, techniques play a vital role in developing the scenario of the team today.

Unfortunately, the girls’ team didn’t get to participate in the tournament owing to a lack of structure. The team reached the semi finals against NIT Nagpur which happens to be a strong team. Despite having robust players, our team with its practical strategies beat them to proceed to the final round with NIT Kurukshetra to which they lost owing to the fatigue caused by scheduling of both semi finals and finals in a single day. Moreover they lost to repercussions of a series of warming up and cooling down due to scheduling and re-scheduling of match which led the team to a Diasporas situation.

Following are the scores as per the scorecard:

   1st half

  • In 10 mins: 12-5
  • Before half (20) mins: 22-15

·   2nd half

  • Last 5 mins: Rourkela-35, Kurukshetra- 44
  • Final score: Rourkela / Kurukshetra- 49:54

Kurukshetra won by 5 points.

Talking to the captain about his experiences, he said,

I wanted my team to be champions under my captainship but somehow we ended up as the runner-up. We feel, attention should be given to us as we’re helping the Institute in bringing a name to it. I want the guidance of a proper and regular coach rather than a local one in boosting up the morals of my team members. Last but not the least; I want another competition to be held up this semester to that we can recover our lost glory. Still I’ll be always proud of having a glorious experience in my NIT tenure.

2.     Basketball

The basketball team of the institute participated in the Inter NIT Basketball competition, which took place in Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur from 5th November to 7th November in the previous year. The preparation of the team was remarkable in the lead up to the event. They practised for at least 5 hours a day, two in the morning and 3 in the evening. The team had this schedule for a month in the lead-up to the tournament. Their coach visited and helped them train for around 15 days before their departure.

In the tournament, the team was able to reach the quarterfinals with the following shorelines:

  • NIT Rourkela V/s. NIT Surathkal-   34-24 in favour of NIT Rourkela.
  • NIT Rourkela V/s. NIT Silchar-        42-23 in favour of NIT Rourkela.
  • NIT Rourkela V/s. NIT Warangal-    35-25 in favour of NIT Rourkela.

The team did well in qualifying first from the pool but unfortunately lost to NIT Jalandhar with the score line of 50-35 in the quarterfinals.

Speaking to K.Praveen Kumar who is the captain of the institute basketball team, he was quoted as saying,

We had a pleasant stay there except for the fact the event was held an entire semester earlier than its previous year, which didn’t give us the ample time which we would have liked. The experience was great and we certainly leartned a lot.

The Women’s Basketball team of the institute did not go for the event, as two of the senior players were busy with their project evaluations, which led to a shortage of players.
