NIT Rourkela hosted the Inter-NIT Swimming and Cricket tournaments from 27th – 30th January. Both events were immensely successful in terms of participation, and the management involved in that was brisk and crisp, to say the least. Cricket, whenever this word is uttered, many bats are wielded in a hurry to play, and as the batsman goes ahead to smash the balls and as the bowler starts his run-up eyeing the stumps, the spectators go berserk cheering for their favourite team. This is the scenario of cricket which is another name of religion in a country like India. NIT Rourkela is no different. The institute suspended the classes for the first half and asked its students to support their team. In a dramatic turn of events, the institute cricket team of NIT Rourkela won the tournament heavily weighing down their final competitor, SVNIT Surat. The institute swimming team also won several laurels and made all of us proud. Venu Pandit went on to become the individual women champion.

Here is the detailed report on the Inter-NIT cricket and swimming tournaments which NIT Rourkela very gallantly, hosted.

Commencement Ceremony

The commencement ceremony of the mega-sports event was scheduled at 04:30 pm on 27th January at Dilip Tirkey Stadium. Many dignitaries including Prof B. Majhi, Director in-charge, Prof. D.R.K. Padhi, Dean (SW), Prof. Japes Bera, President, SAC, graced the occasion. The guest of honour for the evening was Prof. A. M. Najeeb of NIT Calicut. Besides them Prof. B. Mallick and Prof. Santosh Ku. Sahoo, Vice-President of the Games & Sports Society and SAS officer, Dr. P.K. Rout and Dr. T.R. Pattnaik attended the ceremony. Sriya Sainath, Sahiti Ravipathi, and Rishabh Bajaj hosted the entire event which was attended by as many as 28 cricket teams and 6 swimming teams of different NITs of the country.

The ceremony began with the address by President, SAC, NITR who graced the stage and introduced the dignitaries to the audience. It was followed by the address of Dean(SW) and Director in-charge who presented a token of appreciation to the Guest of Honour for his close association with sports since the last 41 years. At the end, Sourav Mishra, captain of the cricket team of the host institute took the oath ensuring fair and healthy participation throughout the tournament.

The tournament witnessed a huge participation with as many as 28 teams out of the 31 NITs turning up for it. With the popularity of the sport in our nation, a huge participation at the Inter-NIT level was expected but little had anyone thought that the count of teams would be this high. (NOTE: VNIT, Nagpur, the champions of last year’s tournament was given BYE and they directly qualified for the pre-quarter final stage)

The matches were usually played at five slots – 07:30-10:30am, 10:30am-01:30pm, 01:30-04:30pm, 04:30-07:30pm and 07:30-10:30pm. Owing to its efficient floodlight facility, STSC was the venue for evening matches after 04:30 pm. The league and pre-quarterfinal matches were 15 overs/innings matches and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final were 20 overs/innings. The matches were played in accordance with BCCI T20 rules and the decision of the officials was final and binding.

The team topping each group advanced to the knockout stage. At the knockout stage, there was a total of 10 teams, including 9 group toppers and VNIT Nagpur, last year’s champions. From the group stage, NIT Calicut, SVNIT Surat, NIT Rourkela, NIT Srinagar, NIT Trichy and NIT Silchar directly advanced to the quarter-finals. MANIT Bhopal and NIT Uttarakhand, VNIT Nagpur and MNNIT Allahabad played pre-quarter matches to qualify for the remaining two slots at quarter-finals. The knock-out fixture of the tournament is as shown:

The Grand Final

From the semi-final stage, NIT Rourkela and SVNIT Surat advanced to the final which was scheduled to be played at Sachin Tendulkar Sports Complex from 08:00 am on 30th January. Owing to NITR’s brilliant run in the tournament, the players and the organising committee requested the Director in-charge, Prof. B. Majhi to suspend classes in the first half of 30th January, so that students of the host institute can cheer their players in the final of this mega event. But because of unavoidable circumstances, the game began around 09:30 am and NITR decided to field after winning the toss.

NIT Rourkela succeeded in putting up an excellent bowling performance by reducing SVNIT to 107/7 in 20 overs. The chase was almost one-sided with the openers playing sensible cricket and taking calculated risks. NIT Rourkela chased down the target in less than 17 overs owing to the major contribution of 47 from their opener Eric Gladson. It is said, T20’s are generally batsman’s cricket, but our bowlers managed to put up an exemplary performance leaving everyone stunned and awestruck.

With heart puffed up with pride, Shaswata Bisi, a senior player of the team expressed:

“The efforts put in by each and every member was commendable. The team effort shown was extraordinary and the way NIT Rourkela played, many people were surprised because not many people expected us to perform this way. I, as a part of the team could not have been more proud of it. We would like to thank the crowd for coming out and supporting us when we needed them the most. Given the huge crowd that turned up, it clearly showed that it was not a victory for NIT Rourkela's cricket team but for the whole of NIT Rourkela. We would also like to thank the support staff for managing such a large-scale tournament so efficiently.”

Due to delays at the beginning of the match, the match ended at around 01:15 pm and the presentation ceremony was re-scheduled to 03:00 pm

Swimming Tournament

The highly anticipated Inter-NIT swimming competitions were conducted in the institute on 27th and 28th January 2017. The participating teams were NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Surathkal, VNIT Nagpur, NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut and NIT Rourkela. All the events took place in the swimming pool situated inside the campus under the supervision of swimming pool officials and the coach.

All the events were conducted in accordance with the rules formulated by FINA, any violation of which would result in a direct disqualification and the decisions of the officials were to be the final word. The first position secures 5 points in individual events. The second and third positions secure 3 and 1 points respectively. For the relay events consisting of 4 players in each team, the points so secured are double than what it is in individual events. NIT Surathkal went on to become the champion team and, Tanishq Didee (NIT Surathkal) and Venu Pandit (NIT Rourkela) managed to zoom past through the tournament to become the individual champions in men and women categories respectively. The detailed fixtures and results of all the events for men and women are given below:

Venu Pandit from NIT Rourkela, who went on to become the individual women champion said,

“The overall experience of preparing for the Inter-NIT swimming tournamentwas nice. The NITR swim club, Coach Purnima Ma’am, and the swimming pool in-charges helped us a lot in this endeavour. I thank all of them for motivating me to participate in the Inter NIT swimming competition.”

Tansihq Didee from NIT Surathkal, who became individual men champion was heard quoting,

“The accommodation was really good as compared to last years’ and everything was well organised. The swimming tournament was equally commendable. I’m really happy that our team won the event. We have been winning quite a few competitions but we are more than just happy that we won even when there was such high participation.”

The Closing Ceremony

The ceremony began at 03:00 pm with the hosts Sriya Sainath, Abinash Behera and Sahiti Ravipathi introducing the dignitaries to the audience. Acting Director, Prof. B. Majhi, Dean (SW), Prof. D.R.K. Padhi, President, SAC, Prof. Japes Bera and SAS officer, Dr. P.K. Rout and Dr. T.R. Pattnaik attended the ceremony. The guests handed over the prizes to the winners of both swimming and cricket tournament. B. Bisi, an NITR alumnus gave an award of INR 5000 to the winning cricket team. Individual awards included Best batsman of the tournament to Prateek Senapathi, Best bowler of the tournament to Satendra Kumar.

Accompanying professors of different institutes presented a token of love to Dr. P.K. Rout and Dr. T.R. Pattnaik for the flawless arrangement of the entire tournament. The visiting players were overwhelmed by dedicated efforts of the organising committee and they appreciated them whole-heartedly for the smooth run during the entire tournament. As per the words of the captain of the SVNIT cricket team:

“The organisation was beautiful and the whole committee was very supportive and helpful. The accommodation, food and ground conditions were excellent. But hooting in the final was a bit more than we expected but again it’s a part of the game. Though I expected more from my players but I am satisfied with my team’s overall performance.”

Sourav Mishra, the captain of the winning team was overjoyed with his team’s performance and thanked each and every member for their valuable contribution. According to him:

“It was an awesome experience to play the big tournament at home. 28 NITs is definitely a large number but the crowd supported us throughout the event. Hats off to them for trusting us and coming out in big numbers. After being the runner up in BHU, we had decided to climb the final stair and that's what we did. It was an eye opener. The credit goes to each and every member of the team for giving their best performance at crucial moments and the result is right in front of everyone.”
