Continuing the trend of conducting several short-term courses, the department of mechanical engineering conducted a three-day short-term course on Waste Heat Recovery and Thermal Energy Storage (WHRTES) from 24th-26th February this year. The colloquium was partially sponsored by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. The short-term course was held in the Senate hall in the main building of the institute. The short-term course was meant for the teaching staff only, including faculty members and research scholars. 38 participants had attended the course with 34 of them being from outside the state of Odisha including 18 research scholars and 10 faculty members of different institute. Registrations were done through demand drafts, both for members who paid in advance and on the spot as well. The fee was INR 3000 for faculty and INR 1500 for research scholars and students from outside institutions while it remained free of cost for participants from within the institute. The accommodation of the faculty members attending the course was done at North Block guesthouse and the students were made to stay at S.D Hall of Residence.

Day 1

Prof. S.Murugan and Prof. Ashok Satapathy, the co-ordinators of the event also addressed the gathering. This was followed by lectures on waste heat recovery and different means of thermal storage by Dr. S.Murugan and Dr. S.Anabarasu with the session breaking for refreshment and lunch break in between.

Day 2

The day started with lectures from Dr. Anabarasu and Prof. S. Chandrasekhar a revered faculty from Anna University, Chennai on the role of water in cool thermal energy storage.  This was followed by lectures from A.Pasupathy also from Anna University, on thermal energy storage and Dr.S.S Mahapatra on phase change materials. Dr. S.Murugan and Dr.Manoj Moharana continued the informative session after lunch with lectures on methods of energy storage.

Day 3

Dr. R.K Sahoo, Dr. P. Mahanandia, Dr.V.Sivakumar and Dr. Ashok Kumar Satapathy, all faculties of our institute gave their respective lectures relating to the field of cold storage, Nanomaterials for energy harvesting, Functional materials for energy applications and CFD in energy applications respectively.   The valedictory ceremony was held at around 4.30 PM with Dr.S.S Mahapatra, giving away the participation certificates to all the members who had taken part in the three-day course and the event ended.

Speaking to Dr. S.Murugan, the chief co-ordinator of the event he was quoted as saying,

The co-operation from the administrative side was brilliant which helped us in conducting the course in a hassle free manner. Everyone extended his or her full support in making this a fruitful venture.
