Reviving the Age Old Science: 3rd International Yoga Day

Since times immemorial, Yoga as an art of life, has unravelled the infinite potentials of human mind and body. On 21st June, 2017, NIT Rourkela in association with NSS (National Service Scheme), the Swami Vivekananda Club and Art of Living organized a Yoga camp to celebrate the 3rd International Yoga Day at Rajendra Mishra Exhibition Hall. Experts from the Art of Living, Dr. Prashant Kumar Padhi and Rashmi Ranjan Dash guided the entire event as per the Common Yoga Protocol by Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy).
The serene event commenced with the lighting of lamp by Director Prof. Animesh Biswas, Dr. Prashant Kumar Padhi, Dr. Khageshwar Ojha and Prof. D.P.Acharya, followed by the felicitation ceremony by Prof. Animesh Biswas. Vedic Mantra was chanted to commence the holistic event. The Yoga started with warm up exercises like light jogging. A multitude of Yogasanas were performed like Tadasana, Pada – Hastasana, Bajrasana, Ardha Ustrasana (Camel posture), Bhujangasana and many more to bring stability and endurance in the body. Furthermore, Surya Namaskar was performed by all while Dr. Khageshwar Ojha was chanting mantras. It was followed by ‘Anulom Vilom’ (Alternate Nostril Breathing Mediation) and Pranayama which rejuvenated everyone.
Monday Morning caught up with the one person whose enthusiasm was unmistakable during the event, the Director, Prof. Animesh Biswas. Expressing his opinions on yoga and the celebration of the International Yoga day in NITR, he says:
Yoga is a holistic exercise for the mind and body & a symbol of our origin. Celebration of International Yoga day is one way of making yoga popular among the student community and the faculty. Being the cream of the society & its future, they have to nurture the country and its heritage. I wish to introduce regular yoga classes in the SAC, for the benefit of students. I also have plans to introduce Naturopathy, which was practiced in ancient India.
A meditation for 20 minutes was even performed on the verses of Shri Shri Ravishankar, which gave utmost tranquillity to all. Finally, the program ended with the chanting of Shanti mantra to radiate positive energy in the environment. Besides this, a Book Exhibition on Yoga was organized at the same venue throughout the day.
The event was possible due the efforts of Professor In charge of NSS, Prof . Debi Prasad Acharya. Upon receiving orders from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, through NSS directorate, Prof.D.P.Acharya rushed back from his ancestral home in Puri to ensure the smooth organisation of the event. Being a Yoga enthusiast, he hopes to popularize yoga in the institute.
The evening program of the aforementioned event witnessed expert lectures on Yoga by Pradip Mohiwi, a Yoga teacher and Naturopathic doctor. Talks by Jagannath Behera, Asst.Manager of SAIL RSP, District Coordinator of Yoga Mahotsav Samiti and Dhruv Patra, Town Co-ordinator of Yoga Mahotsav Shivir enlightened the spectators.
However, despite many students being present in the campus, the turnout at the events consisted mainly of faculty. The current government has taken a lot of initiatives to popularize Yoga, and has also been lauded for its efforts by International Organizations like United Nations General Assembly. We hope that NIT is able to embrace yoga as a healthy lifestyle option and make their well –being a priority.
