Football Frenzy: Institute Vs Freshers Match

Football is a game widely known for uniting people of different backgrounds, class, caste, etc. In a country which is clearly progressing in the sport, it becomes imperative for any institution to encourage football. NIT Rourkela held its Institute vs Freshers football match on the 21st of August at the Dilip Tirkey Stadium(DTS). The match, scheduled to start at 5:30 pm, started half an hour late. Prof. S. Panigrahi, Dean (Student Welfare), was the chief guest invited to see the match. 

The Institute team, led by Debopriya Chottray consisted of Srinivas, Rishabh Pal, Amrit Puhan, Arghya, Animesh, Debasis, Debabrata, Anuroop, Pratyush, Siddhant, Nirmal, Amit, Sreyanshu and Prashant Sharma. The fresher's team meanwhile had Love Krishna, Sai Krishna, Ponnonna, Anirudh, Alok, Biswajit, Sarthak, Gaurav, Khalid, Sameer, Plavak, and Ashutosh.Within seconds of the start, the Institute team was in the lead thanks to a well-taken goal by Prashant Sharma. He then went on add two more goals to his tally, thereby completing what was a well-deserved hat-trick. Amrit Puhan added another goal before half-time to compile the misery of the opposition. At halftime, the scoreboard read 4-0 in favour of the Institute team. The rampage continued after halftime with another goal from the Institute team, this time by the captain, Debopriya Chottray. There were no further goals but plenty of entertaining football from both sides. As the referee, Ayush Moharana blew the full-time whistle the scoreline was a comprehensive 5-0 in favour of the Institute team. After the match, the players embraced each other by shaking hands before proceeding to collect refreshments.

The Captain of the Institute team, Debopriya Chottray seemed pleased with the performance of both the teams, he said,

Every year we look up to freshers to fill the void left by the final year graduating players and add to the talented pool of players of the institute. Regularity is one of the most important things that we expect from them apart from good footballing skills. Currently,  the inter hall tournament is going on after which the inductions for the institute team will start.

A large crowd had turned up to view this match and they were left pretty pleased with the kind of match they witnessed. The freshmen, though outplayed, seemed to be in good spirits after the match.

The match ended at around 7:45 pm with the institute team pocketing a handsome win.
