The Dhirubhai Ambani(DBA) Hall of Residence is a home to nearly 400 boarders. The DBA hall is the most sought-after hall due to its spacious and well-maintained rooms. This year nearly 162 sophomores including Dual Degree, M.Sc, M.Tech and MBA students were accommodated in the hall. The second year students from B.Tech  and B.Tech/M.Tech Dual degree were given rooms in the A block. The students who were residing in the hall from the previous academic  year were accommodated in the B and C Block with the final year students being allotted the B block while the C Block was allotted to the third year students along with Postgraduate(PG) and MBA students. The third year students were given room on the lottery basis in the second and the third floor while the PG students were allotted rooms in the first and ground floor. Amongst all these allotment ordeals, there are some issues which are ignored and are probably the cause for the declining prestige of the hall. Team MM takes a peek into these issues to find out more.

MESS AND DINING

Day and Night Canteen

The DBA Hall of Residence has a proper day-canteen which caters to every need of the students during the daytime. The night canteen at the hall caters to the midnight hunger of the boarders but the night canteen does not have a fixed rate chart, allowing the shopkeepers to charge money according to their will.

K.R. Patel Cafeteria

The general notion of the DBA junta is that K.R. Patel Cafeteria’s food is the worst amongst all the halls. After the shuffling of caterers this year, the quality of mess food at DBA hall seems to be declining each day. The agitated students even filed a complaint to the Chief Warden regarding the change of caterer. The Maintenance Secretary of the hall, Gaurav Kumar Panda, discussed in lengths about the degrading quality of mess food.

The issue of mess food has to be taken seriously. A complaint register will be kept in the mess and complaints regarding mess food will be accepted. If the number of complaints exceeds 50% of the total boarders, then some action will be taken against the mess officials. The action can be taken in any form.

The Mess Secretary, Aditya Mohanty stated that:

The mess menu has been revised with effect from 02.09.17 and the complaints of the boarders will be reviewed for a week after this change. If, still the boarders are not satisfied, then the menu would be revised again considering their suggestions or the matter would be forwarded to the Warden.

About the degrading quality of mess food, the Warden was quoted as saying:

An expert supervisor will be hired for seven days who will be looking after the mess officials and will be scrutinizing their work.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND AMENITIES

Cycle Stand

There have been no cases of cycle theft reported and there’s a peon who looks after the proper arrangement of cycles in the stand, which helps to avoid chaos during peak times. After the Institute reopened, there were several instances when the air pump inside the cycle stand was observed to be out of order and the boarders were compelled to use the air pump of other cycle stands. Addressing this issue, the Warden of the DBA Hall of Residence told Team MM that he will discuss this with the Warden of MSS Hall of Residence and prepare a common budget to buy a new air pump for the cycle stand.

Water Coolers

Providing clean and microbe free water is a basic need, which every hall of residence must satisfy, The Dhirubhai Ambani Hall of Residence consists of 9 such water coolers which are installed along with aqua guards. All the water coolers, except water cooler 008 are operational and are functioning well. However, there were also complaints of the Water Cooler 001 transmitting electrical shocks upon contact and was being repaired yesterday(3rd September 2017).

HAIF Usage

All the rooms of the hall have been provided with curtains, the installment of which occurred during this year’s summer vacation. The Chief Warden had sanctioned a budget of Rs 1440 for putting up curtains in every room of the hall and the authorities of the hall have followed the same guideline.

Stationery Store

The DBA Hall of Residence prides itself in having one of the best stationery stores amongst all the halls of residence. The store provides various stationery items including lab records, notebooks, geometry box, staplers, etc while also providing necessary items like water bottles, cello tapes, glue, etc. The store also consists of both- colour and black and white printing machine alongside a xerox machine. Besides, the store also provides the boarders with packaged foods, cold-drinks, and chocolates.

MAINTENANCE AND PEST ISSUES

The list of problems pertaining to maintenance and pest issues is indeed a long one. The details regarding the various issues are furnished below.

Corridor Cleanliness

There is a severe leakage problem on the second floor of the hall, especially near the bathrooms A328 and B325. The floor is always water-logged and boarders have to walk with extra precaution so as to avoid slipping. The Warden of the hall has forwarded this issue to the Chief Warden and very soon necessary actions will be taken. The sweeping of the corridors is not regular and the room to room cleaning is being done only after boarders remind the cleaning staff at least five to six times. The response of cleaning staff, thus, is not satisfactory at all.

The graffiti on the walls seems to be disturbing a lot of students and seems to disrupt the decorum of the hall which should ideally remain devoid of any type of zoneism.

Room Conundrums

Double seater rooms in the A block have only one tube light installed and the whitewashing of the rooms is also not proper. The last whitewashing of the hall was done in June 2016, and the warden told Team MM that the next whitewashing of the hall is scheduled to take place in the winter vacations, i.e. in the month of December. The rooms have two LAN ports installed which’s a silver lining to the spacious room of the hall. The maintenance secretary Gaurav Kumar Panda told Team MM that after the Dusshera holidays, there is a proposal to install an extra tubelight in all the double seater rooms.

The Maintenance Secretary has assured to procure 30 new mirrors by 15th of September. Addressing the leakage problem, he said that the problem comes under the jurisdiction of the Estate Office and not under that of the Hall Management Council.

Shower heads are missing from all the bathrooms of the hall. Team MM questioned the Warden about the absence of shower heads and malfunctioning of geysers, to which the Warden replied that in the last Hall Executive Council Meeting, a requisition for geysers and shower heads has been raised already.

Pests Sightings

A few weeks ago, there was a snake sighting incident in a boarder’s room inside the hall. Team MM asked the Warden about this to which he replied:

A reason for snakes to come inside the hall might be the waste that is disposed near the hall’s entrance, I have ordered to clean it as soon as possible to prevent any such happening next time.

At night, bats fly throughout the corridors of the A block and have made nests at many places and the sightings of lizards is a very common sight. Not to forget the free roaming of mongrels in the corridors and the cycle stand which paints a very unaesthetic picture.

WATER AND POWER SUPPLY

Water supply inside the hall is ample and sufficient and as such there are no complaints regarding it. The hall sees frequent power cuts, and there is no facility of power backup for the hall. Team MM highlighted this issue to the warden asking him about the generators for the hall, to which he said that they are presently short of budget to afford a generator for the hostel. Here, it is mandatory to know the fact that from this academic year, the hostel rent fees was doubled for all the boarders.

RECREATION

There are two badminton courts in the hall of which none of them is in good playing condition. One of the badminton court which was constructed last year even faces the problem of water-logging. There are no nets in either of the courts and proper lighting in one of the court. The warden is planning to illuminate the badminton courts and fix nets at the courts.

The proposal for volleyball court was also put forward to the warden. He confirmed that if space permits, then we will surely try to make one. The lawns at DBA are regularly cleaned and trimmed to devoid the lawns of weeds. The hall is surrounded by lush green trees and plantations. The hall conducts a garden feast in the month of November and the Hall day in the month of March where the garden is beautifully decorated and a great quality of food is given to its boarders. The hall lacks an active music room which is present in some other hall of residences like the VS Hall of Residence. Moreover, the common rooms of the hall fall short of chairs and a television set in the ground and the first floor. The reading room doesn’t consist of the latest informative magazines and the lone Table Tennis table is setup in the TV Room of the first floor which’s located near the central staircase.

GENERAL SECRETARY’S STATEMENT

Team Monday Morning spoke to Kiran Kumar Patra, the General Secretary of the DBA hall of residence regarding the various problems and he was quoted as saying,

The hall has scanty number of Dustbins. The ratio of the number of dustbins and the number of rooms is quite low which leads to unclean and unhygienic corridors. The lights in the corridors are also not in proper working condition. There are also insufficient tables and chairs in the rooms of the boarders.

WARDEN’S VISION:

Dr. Himanshu B Sahu, the warden of Dhirubhai Ambani Hall of Residence has the foremost target of maintaining cleanliness inside the hall and wants to solve the prevailing issues over the mess and plans to resolve the matter at the earliest.

All in all, the DBA hall of residence has some plaguing issues which can be effectively curbed with the co-operation of the students and the authorities.
