An Affable Friction: Institute team v/s Freshers Cricket Match
In a cricket frenzied country like India, the game needs a minimal amount of introduction. While the country was gripped in the enthralling India and Srilanka ODI series, NIT Rourkela organized the Institute V/S Freshers cricket match. The match was held on the 7th of September at the STSC stadium. The game scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm started late by half an hour.
The toss was won by the captain of the institute team who decided to bat first. The existing institute team under the captainship of Debanand Behera performed vivaciously and scored a mammoth total of 179 runs in 20 overs. Abhishek Mishra with his exceptional batting skills racked up 56 runs with 39 balls followed by Debanand Behera who scored 28 runs in 13 balls. Siddharth tallied 30 runs with 31 balls. With his exceptional bowling skills, Sunny took four wickets spanning over four overs.
This was followed by the turn of the freshers who were next to bat. The team’s batting order collapsed with the whole team back in the pavilion by the end of 14th over while chasing a huge target 180 runs set by the institute team. In what seemed a batting debacle, the freshers could manage to score only 56 runs. The openers seemed to have been struggling from the very beginning, got out after adding just nine runs to the scoreboard. After the middle order collapse, the tail enders could not make many changes to the scorecard also. Mintu Kumar was the game changer for the institute team by taking a total of 5 wickets for which he was adjudged as the Man of the Match.
When asked about the success mantra, Mintu Kumar, a member of the existing Institute team quoted:
We believe in sticking to our basics and concentrating on our strengths so that we can face any of our opponents. Apart from that we also try to work on our weaknesses, thus evolving as better cricketers every day.
The match ended on a happy yet tiring note at around 9:30 pm with a splendid victory attained by the Institute team. The freshmen, though defeated, took the game as a learning experience while the combined effort of all the teammates resulted in achieving success for the Institute team.
