Time and again the zealous students of NIT Rourkela have always brought glory to the institute. These enthusiastic scholars are not only the reason of pride for the institute but also a fountainhead of inspiration for others. It is said that,

No one succeeds without effort; those who succeed owe their success to perseverance. 

Now again it is the time to celebrate the success of a group of fervent and hard-working young team of researchers from Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering.

Under the noble and able guidance of Prof.Kunal Pal, a research paper worked upon by a group of researchers of the Medical Electronics and Instrumentation Laboratory was selected for the 25th European Signal Processing Conference(EUSIPCO) held in Greek Island of Kos from August 28 to September 2, 2017. The research paper named Effect of a Humorous Audio-Visual Stimulus on Autonomic Nervous System and Heart of Females” was a combined effort of the student researchers Mr. Karan Pande, Mr. Suraj Kumar Nayak and Miss Deepanjali Gaur.

EUSIPCO is the flagship conference of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) that offers a comprehensive technical program addressing all the latest developments in research and technology for signal processing and its applications. NIT Rourkela was one of the few Institutes from India including IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Mandi, IIT Gandhinagar, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, DA-IICT Gandhinagar, NIT Calicut, and TCS Innovation Lab Bangalore to send their participants to EUSIPCO.

Watching comedy shows provides numerous health benefits such as relief from stress, reduction in blood pressure, regulation of blood sugar, strengthening of the immune system. It releases happy hormones, such as serotonin, and helps us feel ease. This study was an attempt to recognize the effect of a humorous audio-visual stimulus on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the heart physiology of females. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals were acquired from eleven female volunteers under pre- and post-stimulus conditions. Heart rate variability (HRV) and time-domain ECG analyses were performed to non-invasively realize the effect of the humorous audio-visual stimulus on the ANS and heart physiology, respectively. HRV analysis suggested an increase in the parasympathetic activity during the post-stimulus period. Time-domain analysis of ECG signals suggested a post-stimulus alteration in the electrical activity of the heart. Artificial neural network (ANN) classification resulted in an efficiency of ≥ 85% in both HRV and time-domain ECG analyses.

The authors conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers involved in the research work. The EUSIPCO participant Mr. Suraj Kumar Nayak thanked NIT Rourkela and Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Govenment of India for sponsoring his participation in the EUSIPCO conference.
