The Champions' Genus: NITR Contingent at MNIT Jaipur
With the onset of winter, the athletics and gym squad of NIT Rourkela were spotted gearing up for the much-awaited tournament, the Inter-NIT Sports Meet. This year, hosted by the Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, the sports meet noted a footfall of a large number of students from different NITs. The present year witnessed the sporting fraternity of NITR gearing up for the same with all enthusiasm and determination. Team MM brings to you a detailed report of the performance showcased by these contingents.
The gym team, captained by Abhishek Kumar Sah, a 3rd-year B.Tech. student from the Department of Food Process and Engineering consisted of six members and they represented the institute in three different events, namely Weight Lifting, Power Lifting and Body Building. The events were conducted on 3rd, 4th, and 5th of November respectively.
The athletics team captained by Mahaveer T, a 3rd-year B.Tech. student from the Department Of Chemical Engineering consisted of 16 members and they represented the institute in various athletics events like 100m sprint, discus throw, hammer throw, relay race, etc. over the span of three days.
The team had to go through a bundle of difficulties in the course of preparations. While the institute gym and the hostel gyms helped the team shape up their goal, but the team wasn’t offered with a permanent coach, who would’ve guided them through the tournament. The institute offered a coach for 10 days prior to the tournament and the captain preferred to expend the money into other more essential equipment. Under the able guidance of the captain and consistent help from seniors, the team carried forth its preparations through YouTube videos and other websites. Moreover, they weren’t put on the proper diet that they were supposed to, rather they had to arrange it on their own.
The athletics team of NITR practiced in DTS and the team was provided with a coach 20 days prior to the event. The team received fairly good and effective coaching. The only problem during practice was the hard soil which proved to be a hurdle for the players. This has been brought to the attention of the concerned authorities.
FACILITIES AND HOSPITALITY:
Both the teams were provided with a total daily allowance of 1600 INR and they were also provided with TA. The travel expenses have already been reimbursed whereas a fair part of DA have been reimbursed by the institute, and the remaining will be reimbursed very soon.
Moreover, the teams faced problems at the hosting institute as well. After registering for the tournament on the 1st of November, the team was neither provided with proper diet nor gym facilities for practicing prior to the competitions. They were provided with the accommodation hours after their registration was done.
Just like the previous year, this year also the sportsmen brought in three medals in the inter-NIT gym events.
Bringing in glory for the institute, captain Abhishek bagged the bronze medal in the 59-66 kg category of powerlifting where he performed in 3 different rounds: Squats, Bench Press and Deadlift. Following the footsteps of their captain, Subham Nadda, a 1st-year M.Tech. student from the Department of Mining Engineering bagged the gold in 90kg+ category and Mohammad Hasim, a 2nd-year B.Tech. student from the Department of Biomedical Engineering bagged the silver medal in 70-75 kg category of the bodybuilding event. In this event, the participants had to showcase seven different poses and perform a one-minute act in the tunes played by the organizers.
The previous year had seen the team bagging around 8 medals in the inter NIT tournament. The medal conversion rate of the athletics team is remarkable this year considering the fact that 13 medals have been bagged in total.

The captain of the Central Gym, Abhishek Kumar Sah was quoted saying-
It has been a wonderful experience as a captain, it feels honorable to lead the team wearing NITR colors. I’m proud to be a part of such a venture, at least now people know what powerlifting is. There were some smart decisions we took during the tournament that got us two medals in the bodybuilding category. One thing that we should improve upon, is the number of participants representing our institute, and that will be subsequent to improvement in the Central gym facilities in our institute. We have approached the director and he has responded in positive.
The athletics captain, Mahaveer T was quoted saying-
Our college has very low participation in athletics. The facilities provided in our college is above par and the results can relatively be better. We haven’t won any overall championship yet. The students of NITR need to take more interest in the game. The result this year has been very good and we hope to bring more laurels in future.
Team MM congratulates both the teams for their achievements and wishes them good luck and success in their future endeavors.
