Housing the Debutants with Panache: GD Birla Hall of Residence

The GD Birla Hall of Residence is an abode to the newly admitted freshmen at NITR. The hostel has always been known for its best sanitation, the courteous mess as well as well-maintained gardens and lawns. The hall presently accommodates nearly 400 boarders which consist of first-year undergraduates and postgraduates along with some Ph.D. scholars. Team MM takes a tour of this great hall to assess its highs and lows and addresses its issues.

Sharing a common campus periphery and mess with MV Hall of Residence, they together form the largest hostel among the others. The GDB hall enjoys a close proximity to the academic area, Hexagon Restaurant, Jo’z, Moksha, and ATMGD Birla Hall of residence is generally preferred by the freshers, owing to its bigger room size and well-equipped badminton courts, along with the only indoor stadium on the campus, housed under its roof.

MAINTENANCE:

Factoring in the feedback from the boarders the status of the maintenance can be stated to be satisfactory. Certain issues like instances of unclean bathrooms during the weekends and broken mirrors in some of the washrooms have crept up, sans that, the hall is in almost mint condition, with the corridors and rooms whitewashed and painted recently. Also, the wide corridors of the halls are aided with regular cleaning thus making a decorum for quite a hospitable environment.

RECREATION:

A new sitting place for boarders has been made near the entrance of the hall. Various new sports equipment have been procured this year by the hall management council. Apart from it, the badminton courts and table tennis tables are being well-maintained. Some new benches have been installed near the badminton courts, thus serving as a new hangout spot. A new aquarium is also put in the reception area of the hall which adds to the hall’s aesthetic value.

CAFETERIA:

Boarders expressed their concern towards the diminishing quality of the mess food. Many of the boarders wanted a change in the menu. Also, a common complaint being, the lack of variety of food for the vegetarians. At times, as reported to Team MM by the boarders, there were instances of insects being found in the served food. The following picture is an evidence of the same:

Upon addressing the above issue, the General Secretary of the hall was quoted saying

This incident isn’t due to the mess workers’ carelessness, nor is it a common occurrence. Rather it happened due to the rains, as the insects would enter the mess through the windows and hence the servings were infested. But we have planned to install window nets to prevent any such occurrences.

DAY AND NIGHT CANTEEN:

The hall has a centrally located day-canteen on the ground floor. Satisfying the midnight-hunger of the nocturnal boarders, the night canteen also has a fixed rate chart put up on its walls.

HALL BUDGET:

The budget sanctioned this year for the maintenance and other activities of the hall is around 12-13 Lacs.

WATER COOLERS, AQUA-GUARDS, AND GEYSERS:

Owing to the onset of the winter season, all the water coolers are presently non-operational. Aquaguard number 012, 009, and 005 are out of order. Within a day of repair by the technician, the aquaguards again go out of order and hence there hasn’t been any permanent solution to their problem. Team MM questioned the maintenance secretary regarding this issue, to which he said:

The repeated failure of the aquaguards is due to its continuous operation for 24 hours, I have advised the cleaning staff to look after this and ensure that the aquaguards are switched off at regular intervals.

Geysers: Geyser failure has been a major problem reported by the boarders. The problem proves to be very acute, especially in winter months. Most of the geysers do not work properly despite repeated maintenance and repairing. The maintenance secretary quotes the same reason for the same as that for the water cooler failures, that is the 24-hour continuous usage.

Fire Extinguishers: The extinguishers present on the first and second floors are not in a condition to be operated during the time of emergency.

CYCLE STAND AND STATIONERY STORE:

The cycle stand of the hall is clean and a dedicated worker is deployed to look after the cycles of the boarders. As such, no cases of theft have been reported. The pump is working in a proper condition and there are no complaints related to it.

Stationery Store: A stationery store is run and maintained on the ground floor of the hall. The store deals in all kind of stationery products ranging from notebooks, lab manuals, second-hand books and also has a provision to take printouts and Xerox. Thus the boarders are provided with the facility of a stationary store, at their hands reach.

WATER AND POWER SUPPLY:

No issues of water scarcity or load shedding were reported (other than the planned and notified power cuts) by the boarders. The hall is facilitated by a steady supply of water and power thus ensuring a comfortable stay for the boarders.

WARDEN’S STATEMENT:

I have always tried my best to address the ordeals of the boarders of my hall. This year, before my tenure ends, I would like to establish a fully functional gym inside the hall. Also, the renovation work for a fountain in the hall garden is going to initiate in the coming weeks. The filters and geysers are not being used properly, that is one of the many reasons for their frequent failure.

Team MM asked the warden about the cleanliness issues faced by boarders to which he replied:

These issues have not been notified to me till now and once notified by the boarders I would ensure that the problem gets resolved at the earliest.

The GD Birla hall of residence has always been a hall which has minimal problems related to the general state of affairs and till now, the hall management council has been quite successful in maintaining this status of the hall. Apart from few minor maintenance-related issues, the hall is well equipped and has everything that a fresher year student or a boarder needs for his comfortable stay.
