Fitness, along with proper nutrition, is important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Staying fit increases energy, maintains physical functionality, and prevents complications from chronic diseases. Moving on the same path, NITR hosted an Annual Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Best Physique competition for the sports and fitness enthusiasts of the campus.

This event was organized by the Games and Sports Society, Student Activity Centre. Specific arrangements were made for the same near the Swimming Pool Complex. Scheduled to be held on 2nd of February at 6.30 pm, the event got delayed by about 30 minutes owing to some technical issues.

Mr. Sunil Patra (Arjuna Awardee) and Mr. K C Mohapatra, who have already been judges for national level competitions, were the chief guests for the evening. Other dignitaries who graced the occasion were SAS officer, Dr. T R Pattnaik, Dr. Naresh Vissa, Prof. R C Pradhan and Miss. Purnima Joshi. Institute gym team captain, Abhishek Sah left no stone unturned in arranging the event.

The participants had to go through a series of tasks like Deadlift- where the strength of the legs and back are tested, Squat- which determines the strength of the participant's thigh, Bench Press- measuring the strength of chest and biceps and finally weightlifting- where the strength of shoulders was focused on.

The competition started with the first event of weightlifting. The participants were put under weight check for maintaining fairness and transparency in the game. They were put through two rounds. The Snatch is a single movement where the lifter holds the bar in a wide grip, lifts the weight off the ground overhead in one movement, then stands upright holding the bar overhead. The Clean and Jerk is a two-part movement. First, the lifter holds the barbell in a shoulder-width grip, then pulls the weight up to the shoulders and then stands up with the barbell balanced on the shoulders. Each lifter was given three attempts at each of the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk.

Powerlifting event followed next. Each competitor was allowed three attempts on each of the squat, bench press, and deadlift, depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in. The lifter's best valid attempt on each lift counted toward the competition total. For each weight class, the lifter with the highest total won.

The last event of the evening was the Best Physique event. Contestants had to walk individually to the center of the stage in bare feet, do two half turns, posture and pose and then walk off to the opposite side of the stage. They were judged based equally upon their Physical Upper Body Symmetry, Size, Muscle Condition and Presentation. Stage presence proved to be an essential part of the judging consideration.

With all fairness and justice, the judges announced the results of the events. Aniket Santoshwar, an M.Tech, first-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was the winner of the weightlifting event, and Vijay Bhan, an M.Tech second-year of the Department of Computer Science Engineering was awarded the first prize in the powerlifting event. Mr. Jiva Subramani, an MTech first-year from Department of Civil Engineering won the Best Physique event and was awarded the title of NITR Shri.
