Several organizations in our country organize training programmes every year in different national universities spreading the light of scientific knowledge in various domains of engineering and augmenting the reach of students to advancements in technologies. IIRS (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing), a unit under Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India conducted its outreach programme last year from August 21-December 01 on the " Basics of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, and Global Navigation Satellite System ".

It was the idea of Prof. Md. Equeenuddin, HOD, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences to conduct a series of 3 courses under this outreach programme last year in the institute with Prof. N.K. Vissa as the coordinator, to give the students and research scholars a better insight on the use of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Global Navigation Satellite System and associated geospatial technologies and a hands-on experience with these evolving technologies by interacting with the scientists directly. These short-term courses were free of cost and open to students from all branches and required prior registration. This was a distance learning program enabled through internet and A-view software platform developed by Amrita e-learning Lab in collaboration with Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India.

More than 50 students registered for these courses, majority of which comprised of M.Tech students, few B.Tech students and research scholars too.Everyday attendance was taken which played a pivotal role in the certification of the students.  After the courses were taken up, all the attendees had to appear for an online exam. One ought to have scored well in this exam and had at least 70% attendance for being eligible to be awarded certificates.

On 14th March 2018, the deserving students were felicitated in the Senate Hall in the gracious presence of the Director, Prof. Animesh Biswas, Coordinator, Prof. N.K. Vissa and Prof. Manoj Kumar Maharana, Head of Department, A.N. Khosla Centre for Technology Enabled Learning(ANKTCEL). Certificates were given to around 25 students. As told by the Coordinator, the only problem found was that many students missed the classes during the puja vacation. This was the second time such a programme was witnessed by the institute with its first edition conducted in the year 2015.

Team MM congratulates the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for this considerate initiative and wishes that such fruitful courses be conducted every year for the upliftment of students.
