Rourkela, popularly known as the Steel City of Odisha and even called as Ispat Nagar is surrounded by a range of hills and encircled by rivers. The city experiences a relentless summer. The temperature of the city rises up to 50oC in extreme conditions making life arduous. Keeping in view the strenuous conditions, the Senate of NITR passed a proposal based on the timing of working hours during summer. This idea for changing the class time was proposed in the last academic session by Srimoy Mund during his final year. After a thorough discussion on the timings, the Senate passed a bill modifying the class timing from 7 AM to 7 PM with 4 hours interval in between, to be more precise the first half is from 7 AM- 12 PM and the second one from 4PM – 7PM.
In order to gauge the opinion of the NITR Junta regarding the new working hours, Team MM conducted a poll.
Do you prefer classes with a timing of 7 AM to 7 PM, with a four-hour break in between?
46% of NITR junta opted for the first option which quoted
Yes, I prefer such a timetable as it would give relief from the scorching sun and provide scope for an ample amount of rest.
The scorching heat during summers has been the root cause of various problems. The loo usually referred to as the evil wind has led to severe health disorders like dehydration, headache, nausea and many more problems. The cancellation of classes in the afternoon session is a respite from the unbearable heat. This would even lead to a reduction in the number of loo affected problems. Its believed that a fresh mind has an ability to concentrate and grasp more. The interval of 4 hours would provide ample amount of rest and help the students revive back to work with more energy and improved concentration.
But, the majority of NITR junta had a different opinion. Nearly around 52% preferred the option that stated:
No, I think it will hamper the usual life cycle of a student and also disrupt the club activities.
Majority of the students at NITR prefer to study till late at night. Shifting the classes to early 7 AM in the morning would definitely hamper the regular schedule of the students prior to the End Semester examinations. Most of the club and sports activities are set in motion after the classes. The extension of classes till 7 PM would alter the regular functioning of the clubs and sports practice. The change in class timing from 7 AM to 7 PM has limited the recreational hours of the students. There has been no notice regarding the change in the working time of Academic Office and Dispensary. Currently, the Academic time for students is restricted to 5PM – 6PM and the dispensary time is from 9AM – 11AM and 4PM – 7PM. The change in class timings demands a change in the functioning hours of Academic and Dispensary. Due to the scheduling of classes early in the morning and in between 4PM – 7PM the breakfast and snacks hour is skipped. Students have already paid the mess fees for the entire semester and there is no lucidity related to the switch of mess timings. With the installation of ACs in LA, the added advantage of getting respite from the summer by staying indoors is nullified as well.
In the poll, nearly 2% of the voters chose to stay indifferent and voted for the third option
I do not have any opinion.
This usually represents that section of the populace who aren’t affected by the change in timings and are flexible enough to adjust to either of the class hours.
As the new decision has been implemented keeping in view the severity of summers and various health problems owed to it, it is expected that the authorities also give a precise and clear-cut notice regarding the working hours of Dispensary, Academic Offices, and Mess. While the decision was clearly taken sighting the issues of the harsh summer, the shift in the time table and daily schedule of the students will severely affect the populace and the preparation for their exams.
