May 28, 2018 | Team MM
The Department of Planning and Architecture started its journey at NIT Rourkela in the year 2013 with the objective of amalgamating the aesthetics and technology together into a piece of art, in a creative way, not only to fulfil the societal need of shelter and to solve the infrastructure problem, but also to take care of the emerging concern of energy and environmental issues. Producing socially responsible architects who would be leaders in the field of design, implementation, management of human habitats & ancillary services and experts in application of state of the art technologies is the aim of the department.
The department presently offers a five-year undergraduate program in architecture and doctoral research programmes with specialisations in Housing and Urban & Regional Planning. In due course, the department also intends to introduce a two year post graduate programme in urban and regional planning.

Planning and Architecture focuses on a broad range of perspective linking common concerns: site and context, use and form, building methods and materials, and the role of the architect. The department sees the architect less as a sole creator of an autonomous building than as a collaborator in shaping the physical environment. Studios of increasing complexity form the base of architecture and planning curriculum. They have a strong commitment to urban contexts and challenges of planning, from core studios to advanced options studios and workshops in cities around the nation.
With a group of 10 active practitioners composing of the faculty, Planning and Architecture at NITR iscenteredd on contemporary practice with faculty members having diverse research interests. They conduct basic and applied research in the area of sustainable architecture, energy efficient architecture, green architecture, acoustics, illumination, landscape architecture, interior design, urban planning, transportation planning, infrastructure planning, environmental planning and housing along with interdisciplinary collaboration, being keenly aware of the necessity to learn and borrow from, as well as to instigate exchange with other disciplines. The doctoral students at P&A are working on the field of building energy, architectural conservation and regional planning (migration and infrastructure).
Recently shifted to a brand-new state-of-art facility, the infrastructure includes 5 studios, computer laboratories equipped with drafting and visualisation software like AutoCAD, Google sketch up etc, drafting studios, model making workshop, department library with more than 700 volumes, building energy lab, printing and plotting facility, construction yard, visual arts laboratory and material laboratory.
The department encourage and help students to undertake optional summer internships after completion of 4th and 6th semester which is helpful to understand the real-world scenario and field work. The department also organises seminars by external practicing architects every semester and workshops on design and arts. The students boast commendable achievements at national level competitions like ZONASA. Students from the department are selected in SPA -School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi for perusing Masters in Urban Design and Housing and IIT Bombay for Product Design and Automobile Design. Students have also qualified for National Institute of Design.
The Head of the Department Prof. Dr. Basudatta Sarkar, talking about the scope and prospects of development at the institute said,
The Department of Planning and Architecture, NIT Rourkela is gradually improving both in terms of infrastructure and faculty strength. With the first batch of students out, we are trying to put further emphasis on internship and placements by trying to build a strong alumni base. The faculty members and non-teaching staffs are helpful and everyone is working very hard to take the department to a new level.
A rather young department in the block, P&A department is striving for national recognition with huge efforts being put from both the student community as well as the dedicated faculty. Team MM wishes luck to all the prospective students and the department in their future endeavours.
