The department of Chemical Engineering is one of the oldest departments of NIT Rourkela, established in the year 1961. The vision of setting up the department reads as
To become an internationally acclaimed department of higher learning to address major societal issues and solve technical challenges faced by chemical and allied industries through eco-friendly technologies.
It focuses on the chemical processes for manufacturing of different products, designing of equipments, fundamental understanding, and the technology of chemical, petroleum and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, foods and many other products. It owns many sophisticated equipments like BET surface area analyser, TGA, HPLC, nanoparticle size analyser etc. in its research labs which serve the purpose of satiating an engineer’s research appetite.
The department is placed amidst lush-green foliage and in symbiosis with the newly established Food Process Engineering department in the same building. The current faculty strength of the department is 15 who ably guide the students in pursuing various courses in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, Dual-Degree as well as the PhD programmes. 60 seats were filled for the Bachelor’s and Dual-Degree programmes for the academic year 2017-18 through JoSAA and DASA. NIT-R also provides the best of facilities for Master’s and PhD in Chemical Engineering.
Envisioning the purpose of establishment, the department has taken up various research works in various fields. Major Fields of research in which projects have been undertaken by the faculty and the students include nanomaterials and its applications, petrochemicals, water treatment and analysis, environmental remediation, surface chemistry etc. The notable sponsors have included Science and Engineering Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Ministry of Mines, New Delhi etc.The Training and Placement Cell has opened the doors for many PSUs, private companies and MNCs for offering job opportunities to the students of the Department of Chemical Engineering of NITR. On-campus internship opportunities have been offered in plenty by recruiters like Sun Pharma. Students have also secured prestigios off-campus research internships in reputed Institutes in India and abroad through programs like MITAACS and DAAD. Students of the department have also bagged the prestigious SN Bose Research Internship in Minnesota, USA. Students from the Chemical Engineering department have also been placed in the Fortune-500 Multi-National Corporations, a remarkable feat that speaks volumes about the department's legacy. Mr CP Gurnani, Managing Director and CEO of Tech Mahindra, is an alumnus of NIT Rourkela with a B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering.
