Computer Science and Engineering, the most sought-after branch in NIT, Rourkela, deals with a systematic study of computer programming, software design, and networking. The courses focus on the theoretical foundation of computations and computational design and its application in computer systems. Deep-rooted in the concepts of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering involves an interaction of hardware, software and computing systems. Established in 1982, the department has dynamically progressed according to industrial demands with augmented scopes of research and development.
After the dual degree courses were discontinued from the academic year 2017-18, currently, the department offers B.Tech (4 years) and M.Tech courses, with an intake of 90 and 60 students per batch in B.Tech and M.Tech courses respectively. Mr. Durga Prasad Mohapatra is serving as the head of the Department. The total number of faculty members sums up to 22.
The mission of the department remains in providing high-quality practical education through fundamental principles of theory, abstraction, software design, computation and network as per the research and industrial demand.
The branch is well equipped with modern laboratories like software engineering, advanced database, information security and data communication, image processing and clustered computing, and hardware laboratory. Around 60 research students are currently pursuing research on varied areas of computing, software, and networking. The department is also proudly undertaking 7 ongoing research projects under different professors and aims to expand their horizons in the field of research and development.
An insight into placement scenario reveals the improvements in the nature and number of software and IT companies that visit the campus for recruitment. Although, lack of airport till recently and the interior locations of the institute have adversely affected the placements we have never looked back in continuing the rich legacy. Taking a brief note on the placement statistics (2017-18), many reputed companies visit the campus, Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, SAP Labs, Honeywell, Veritas, C-Dot are few of them. Placement and Internship percentages have been consistently ringing in high numbers for all kinds of courses.
On asking about the status quo of the department, Mr. Durgaprasad Mohapatra, Head Of the Department states,
We are working hard to improve the academic structure, revise the curriculum keeping in view the market and industry demands, are quite ahead in research and development and plans to take up more research projects and have been consistently improving in placements and internships.
