Putting Innovation First: Department of Industrial Design

Industrial Design is a process of design applied to products that are manufactured through the techniques of mass production. This discipline applies the knowledge of ergonomics and the artistic legends to create attractive, user-friendly and innovative products. The department was established in 2011 with a futuristic vision after considering the trends in the industry requirements. The course offered in NITR has largely been engineering based in the past with the degree being awarded being a Bachelors of Technology in Industrial Design. Courses related to basic electronics and mechanical engineering are included in the curriculum, but this department is different in nature from other departments. The curriculum, to a certain extent, matches with those of Master’s in Industrial design in IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore, and of other reputed foreign universities’, with a basic emphasis being on product design and development.
Performing research and providing contemporary education in the field of industrial design for creating useful and innovative products, systems and related services is what it aims for. There are numerous objectives of the Department of Industrial Design. Designing a system to meet the desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability is its foremost purpose. One of the numerous benefits of this discipline is that one gets ample time to work on projects and research papers.
The department not only offers UG courses but also has PG courses and research programs for scholars. Unlike other institutes that house the Department of Industrial Design, NITR offers a B.Tech degree to its designers which is inimitable, to say the least. On talking to the Head of Department, Professor Mohammed Rajik Khan was quoted as saying:
Our curriculum is updated every year as directed by a team consisting of members from IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IISc Bangalore etc. It is modified in such a way so as to impart students the concepts of design as well as technology.
There has been notable research work by students on brake pedal design and vertebral implants. Other research works are in collaboration with ICSR, New Delhi. Despite being a relatively new-fangled department in NITR, it has numerous facilities like CAD (Computer Aided Design) lab featuring 3D design software like SolidWorks and CATIA, an analysis lab with ANSYS and other software and popular rendering software like Rhino and Autodesk Alias. Traditional photo editors and content creators like Corel Draw, Adobe Creative Studio tools like Photoshop and Illustrator are also available. Product development centre, Robotics lab and Art, Aesthetics and Design lab are also available which facilitate the creation of prototypes with ease. There is also an Ergonomics Simulation Laboratory, which is not fully developed, but it is aimed to be wholly functional in near future.
The branch strength is nearly 150, from 4 years of 30 students in the freshmen, sophomore, pre-final and final years respectively, while that of the M.Tech. batch is 20.
The placement and higher education scenario have depended to a very large extent on the efforts of the graduates, for Industrial Design as a profession demands a quality portfolio with select best works of the graduates. Students having a keen inclination towards the branch have been absorbed in various automobile and manufacturing companies as well as notable design studios, through on and off campus procedures of placement. A notable chunk of students has also been absorbed into the UI/UX designing industry. A considerable many of the graduates have also opted for more conventional jobs in the field of data analytics and information technology. The branch has also witnessed a slew of talented graduates opting for higher education in emerging fields related to Industrial design like human-centered design, digital illustration, visual communication, mechatronics, automotive design, and styling etc. in notable universities in India and abroad as well.
