Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering: Forged to Excellence

In the world of computers, fast technology, superfast vehicles and towering skyscrapers, the Metallurgy engineering maintains the durability of the backbone in the growing economy. Along with Materials Science, it relishes the growing demand of better raw-materials for a developed future. So, it won’t be wrong quoting one hits a jackpot if one gets these two fairly-related streams under one roof in an institute and, NIT Rourkela surely boasts of this jackpot.
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, established in 1963, is one of the oldest departments on the campus, has seen the institute’s growth over years and boasts of its national stature and prestige. The annual student intake for B.Tech is 60 under the guidance of 20 highly experienced and qualified faculties. With available laboratory facilities, the department cares to carve one out as a proper engineer.
The highly-qualified faculty of the department have many reputed publications. The volume of published work in the referred journals is enormous counting nearly 80 in the session 2017-18. Traditionally, the department has always prioritised the study of processed materials. Much effort is dedicated towards improving the Undergraduate program by installing and improving Metallography, Nano-materials facilities and Computational Metallurgy.
Numerous research projects are carried out in the department which is sponsored by Naval Research Board (NRB), DRDO; Council of Scientific Industrial and Research (CSIR); Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and many more. The notable research projects include Effect of Hygrothermal Conditioning and Cycling on CNT Embedded GFRF Composite, Development of Zirconium based alloys by Mechanical alloying and Fabrication of Ti-TiC metal matrix composite from waste Ti chips. The dedication of the faculty team is an icing on cake for enthusiasm of students leading the department on a successful path. Each faculty supervises atleast 2 research scholars widening the department’s scope.
The Head of the Department, Prof. Smarajit Sarkar had the following to say on the status quo of the department:
The success of the department is reflected by its placement records and package. The research scenario has been outstanding. The GATE results serve as an example of the quality of education. An International Summit is going to be organised by the department on the campus towards the end of this year. I hope to experience MM progressing more.”
The Placement and Higher Education Scenario of the Departments stands testimony for the quality of education provided. There has been no dearth of lucrative on campus offers for the discipline, with recruiters of the steel making and manufacturing industries forming a huge chunk of the recruiters. Students of the branch have consistently performed exceptionally well in examinations like GATE and also secured seats in top International Universities. Satyakam Kar (2018 Batch) is currently pursuing Masters at Zurich, Switzerland. BSK Gargeya secured AIR-18 in GATE. Major recruiters like Exxonmobil and Suzuki Motors have visited this year.
All these laurels and notified points clearly make Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, a prized entity for undergraduates as well as research enthusiasts.
