ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) promotes the art, science and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe. It is a not-for-profit membership organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skill development across all engineering disciplines. Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading industrialists, ASME has grown through decades to include more than 130,000 members over 158 countries around the globe. India comes under District G (Asia-Pacific) of this large community. ASME started its operations in the student community in India around 3 years back.
The NITRKL chapter of ASME was officially recognized by the Technical Society of SAC in January 2013. We at ASME-NITRKL aim to boost, assist and endorse research, analysis and innovation in all facets of engineering, by bringing together students from all disciplines under one umbrella.
The main objectives of ASME-NITRKL are:
- To promote the extensive large scale use of clean and renewable resources in as many practical aspects as possible.
- To harness the human energy to create an economical and efficient transportation means to commute. Our initiative regarding the design and fabrication of a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) is the perfect example of how we aim to achieve this said goal.

Astro NITR is an astronomy and astrophysics club. Everyone's fascinated with Astronomy at least once in their lives; whether it's from learning about stars, the huge distances they are at, or simply by a Nat Geo documentary. Our objective is to keep that fascination alive. The naive conception of Astronomy is that it is a riddled with intimidating mathematics and physics. What many don't know, is Astronomy pushes the boundaries of engineering to new levels at every step. Whether it's the Hubble Space Telescope or the WMAP project, the innovations and technological advances have always been in plenty. As an example, in the last academic session, we have built our own, 5-inch dobsonian telescope (focal length of 900mm). And it works! Though it's a modest example, we have all the intentions of starting bigger projects in the coming sessions.
We also have activities for theory lovers. We have classes on astrophysics (stellar structure and formation, their lifecycles) etc. Amazing thing about these is, freshmen physics and high school math are enough to handle the topics. Sometimes, we do wander into topics of cosmology; the big bang theory, multiverses, properties of black holes etc.

We at the Mathematics Club of NIT Rourkela believe that Mathematics is fun and rewarding, rigorous, but also a most satisfying outlet of human creativity. We want to reach out to everyone who has been enthralled by the “cold austere beauty” of Mathematics and go beyond the usual bounds of Mathematics set as academic requirements.
We are an active technical club: we regularly hold fun but challenging competitions for students, like Ankotsav and Math fest. We hold workshops on topics as diverse as Rubik’s Cube, Mat lab and Mathematical simulation of real life problems. We like to talk Mathematics through our very own bi-annual journal Vilokanam. We also try to make an impact beyond NIT Rourkela by encouraging school students to take up Mathematics outside of the classroom through our outreach program Mathematics Talent Search Examination (MTSE) and Numero Fest.

Civil Engineering Students' Technical Club (CEST) is a new club started in our Institute. This club intends to provide a platform for students to think, reflect and wonder about the phenomena involved in civil engineering. The vision statement of the club would reflect this precisely-
To sustain and nurture the enthusiasm of students of NIT Rourkela about civil engineering and facilitate their professional growth
Most students lose interest in engineering and focus on grades during their studies. This Club desires to reinforce the knowledge and excitement they attained in their classes through interesting activities. The students would expose themselves to different areas of civil engineering and also engage in teamwork learning and helping others.
The broad areas the club would try to cover are:
1. Reinforcing the fundamentals of civil engineering.
2. Appreciating contribution of past civil engineers and researchers in developing the field.
3. Working on projects giving students hands-on experience which would also simulate the thinking of students and lead to solution of any problem faced by the Institute or the society.
4. Making students industry ready by conducting workshops and seminars regarding industry practices. Training programmes in related softwares etc would also be undertaken.
5. Creating audio-visual and other forms of learning aids that would be useful to subsequent batches of students as well. Also a magazine and a website will be run by the club disseminating related information to students.
The club intends to achieve these objectives by conducting a stream of activities; few of them are given below.
1. Workshops- Workshops will involve resource persons from industry. These sessions will focus on familiarizing students with the requirements and practices followed in industry. Career counseling, Software training and professional skills training will be provided.
2. Seminars- Seminars will be organized wherein resource persons from industry and academia would deliver talk on topics of importance. Also faculties of other departments of NIT Rourkela engaged in research regarding civil engineering related problems will be invited to deliver talks.
3. An exhibition would be organized for school students in the neighbourhood in which exhibits and events depicting the glory and importance of civil engineering field would be presented. The exhibition would acts as a tool to popularize civil engineering at school level and also increase children’s awareness to things like preparedness to natural calamities.
4. Events- Events will be conducted on a weekly basis. These events would attempt to engage students in civil engineering related discussions and knowledge sharing outside the classroom atmosphere. Special focus will be on making students conversant with fundamental aspects of civil engineering. Two examples of such planned events are ‘Teach Your Granny’ and ‘Replay’. In ‘Teach Your Granny’, participants would be given a common technical term, say ‘resonance’, and they would have to explain it to a layman. The ‘layman’ may be anyone without an engineering background. The evaluation will be based on the understanding of the layman. In ‘Replay’, a simple and famous law or formula, say Pythagoras theorem, would be given to participants on the spot and they have to derive it based on their knowledge immediately.
5. Innovative Projects- Student teams would work on some innovative topic like retractable structure, low cost shake table, software to simulate civil engineering phenomena etc.
Thus the club would act as a forum for dissemination of knowledge and would complement the classroom learning.

A brief description about the club (including its aims and objectives)
The Literary and debating club of NITRKL – Clarion, founded on February 26th 2009 by a bunch of enthusiasts, is the only club of this genre to have made a mark on the institute and also on a national level.
The two prominent stands of the club are to promote the debating culture and encourage writing attitude in the institute. The club has a very authentic and transparent way of inducting members and the process makes sure that people with genuine interest make it through.
The major focus of Clarion presently is to maximize the debating culture, the format of the debate , primarily being Parliamentary Debate (Asian).Clarion sends out teams to participate in the national/international level debating tournaments. There have been two debating tournaments organized by Clarion during NITRUTSAV 12– the first NITR Parliamentary debate and its sequel.
Clarion releases its monthly tabloid – ET CETERA which started in January 2013. The genre of this tabloid is very different from the conventional magazines and the official newsletters in the institute making it very catchy and thus the hits are all time high. The tabloid is very outreaching to the NITR junta and encourages contributions from one and all. The editing of this tabloid is however taken up by the members of Clarion. You can find the latest copy from https://www.facebook.com/clarion.etcetera .
During the weekly meetings, members pool in their intellect and have general discussions on topics of common and special interests, thereby expanding the common knowledge pool.
Model United Nations is another aspect that the club deals with, which gives the students an opportunity to discuss world problems as the world leaders do in the real life.

Though fundamentally a quiz club, we engage in trivial pursuit of knowledge, encompassing a plethora of fields such as Spelling Bee, Knowledge Hunts, and Literary Activities. We are currently a group of about 25 engineering students from who think and visualize things with a purpose to learn. Though engaged in classes and practical field work as part of the curriculum, we chuck out time to have sessions on recent events occurring around the world. Our activities include conducting regular quizzes in different genres in our institute as well as in various schools in and around Rourkela. Our club organizes an annual quiz for schools of Rourkela, and this year we are making it bigger than ever, by incorporating teams from all over the state.
