Building career through atoms: Department of Atomic Energy

Energy is a key component in the development of the country.
These are words spoken by India’s eminent physicist, Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. India’s energy needs have majorly depended on petroleum resources, followed by hydel power. But this scenario cannot last forever considering the limited resources. The situation calls for a mostly untapped source of energy. Here comes the mantle and core of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) which aims at harnessing the energy inside the atom, nuclear energy to be precise. This organization has grown tremendously over the years and provides a lot of career opportunities for the undergraduate and post-graduate students.
Miss Ranjini Menon, Public Awareness Cell, DAE, visited NIT Rourkela last Wednesday at the TIIR building to enlighten students about career opportunities at the DAE. The lecture began at 11 am and was both meant to inform about career opportunities as well as impart knowledge about the nuclear energy systems. The session began with the introduction of DAE. The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) (also known as the Paramanu Urja Vibhag) is a department directly under the Prime Minister of India with headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. DAE has been engaged in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research. It was founded by Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a scientist well ahead of his time, one who refused to work abroad at Cambridge University and rather work for the development of the energy sector India. In the words of the speaker of the session,
There is a huge misconception that all factories create pollution. The true facts remain hidden until someone uncovers it. Hence the Public Awareness Cell at DAE aims to bridge the gap between the public and DAE.
With the motto, “DAE—Atoms in the service of the nation”, they constitute of various departments not only to ensure energy security but food security, water security, health security, and national security as well. Their goal is to harness world-class scientific and technological strength through research, education, and industries. The department is so important that it comes directly under the Prime Minister of India. The DAE has four sectors, the R&D, the public sector, the industrial sector, and the service and support sector.
It is important to be aware of the fact how energy consumption has changed throughout the time. India needs to rely more on electricity than on fossil fuels. According to the Human Development Index, more electricity consumption implies more standards of living. India is still behind China in harnessing and consuming electrical energy. The major sources of electricity in India are hydel and thermal power. Whereas on the other hand, nuclear energy, if properly harnessed can produce electrical energy more efficiently and decreased the loss of money and time.
Coming to the career opportunities at DAE, they follow a hire and train approach- to produce industry ready manpower. Tacit, explicit and implicit knowledge is transferred by practicing professionals. There is an Orientation course for Engineering Students (B.E., B. Tech, B.Sc.-Engineering and integrated M.Tech). The selection procedure has two stages. One can qualify the first round by applying through their GATE score or by sitting for the BARC online exam. The second round consists of an Interview in the month of May or June at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) TS Complex, Mumbai. The age limit is 26 years as of 1st of August in the year of applying. For more details regarding the selection procedure, one can visit the official site of DAE. The previous year, out of 6000, only 9 people were given jobs from Odisha. A job at the DAE comes with a lot of perks and emoluments too, like residential, free education for children, etc. So, if anyone has an interest in the field of atomic energy, the DAE is one of the best and most lucrative options available.
