      • J-1 students must apply for either Academic Training.
      • CPT, OPT or academic training must be approved by your home institution prior to beginning your SURF placement.

    • Rules for OPT
      • It requires the student to submit an employment authorization application to the Immigration. By employment authorization application, we mean it is a part of the formal procedure of US Citizenship and Immigration Services. It is issued to those foreign nationals who are eligible to work in the US.
      • The application process requires a new I-20, endorsed by the student’s current international advisor, for OPT.
      • On being approved by the Immigration, an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will be sent to the student by the Immigration.
      • Note that EAD is quite essential to begin SURF.

      • Students are required to contact the current international advisor as soon as the SURF Application begins.
    • Paid/Unpaid
It is a paid internship wherein SURF Fellows are awarded a stipend of 6275 USD for a ten week period. The payment will be made in equal instalments in late June and late July.

The internship is scheduled for a period of 10-12 weeks and it generally begins in mid of June. Applications are due on February 22 of every year.
    • Procedure
This is quite different from the normal application procedures followed in India. The procedure can be summed up in these steps:
      • Early interaction is highly essential for filling a successful application. You have to look for a mentor whose research interests you and you would be benefitted by working with him/her.
      • You have to look out for a suitable mentor in the Caltech Faculty website. He should agree to support your application, help you to develop and define a research project, and assist you in the writing of the research proposal.
      • Visiting students will have to materialize this through e-mails, skype or phone.
      • The applications should contain:
      1) An online application
      2) A research proposal was written by the student
      3) Confidential letters of recommendation(Visiting students are required to submit confidential letters from faculty (at least two in the relevant discipline))
      4) An unofficial transcript for visiting students.
    • Other relevant information
For any internship you apply, enthusiasm and interest are the prime factors in considering your application. They distinguish you from the flock and provide the selection committee with a strong and valid reason why you should be chosen over the others. It should carry enough creative and intellectual content and also should bear enough weight age for publication in the refereed literature. So if you strongly desire to be a Caltech SURF Fellow, harvest the best ideas that you can!
    • The proposal
Try to give a crisp, short and specific proposal as it will be referred to by many. You should include all essential points like what experimental techniques you intend to implement in the project, how stronghold you have with regards to the theoretical knowledge synching with that of your proposal and also chalk out a tentative work plan. Your proposals would be reviewed by the mentor and by a member of the faculty in the project field.
    • Recommendations
Students would be required to submit the contact information of the faculty they wish to get recommended from. After this, the online application will seek a recommendation from the recommender. They will have to submit the recommendation into the online application system. Recommendations are also due on February 22nd so submit your recommender information well in advance.
    • Transcript
Visiting students would be required to submit an unofficial transcript at the time of application. If an award is offered, you will be asked to have an official transcript mailed in a sealed envelope from the records office at your college or university.
    • Criteria on which your application will be judged
      • Research Proposal
      • Proposed project

  • INRIA France

    • The programme is aimed at undergraduate as well graduate students working on a Master’s degree or PhD. It coordinates the selection of students in order to assist Inria researchers in hosting excellent interns in their fields, and to give the interns a taste for working in an international scientific environment and the desire to return to Inria for a doctoral thesis or post-doctoral research.
This incentive programme makes provision for the supervision and training of foreign interns by Inria project-teams researchers. It enables them to benefit from financial support for their research visit to France. Internships at Inria contribute to the interns’ scientific, professional and personal development. In the case of a research visit for Master’s or PhD students, an extended stay must in principle be accompanied by co-supervision from an Inria researcher who is recognised as such by their university back home.
    • Paid/Unpaid Status
: Students will be selected both by Inria project-teams and the European and International Partnerships Department. They will receive a monthly grant from the EIPD. The amount is fixed by the french rules (508.20€).
    • External financing
Charpak research internship program Excellent program supported by the Embassy of France in India. He allows the Indian, level students BTech or MTech, to come in France for a stay of maximum 3 months by granting them a complement to bonus (approximately 310 € / month) and a grant of social security cover (social convention, support of request of access for the CROUS). This grant can come as a supplement to the bonus DRI proposed for the candidates selected within the framework of the program Internships.
    • Duration
      Minimum 8 weeks
    • Time of Application and Procedure to apply
The researcher does not just have a candidate; we ask an " existing collaboration ".
Students may be hosted at any time during the year, subject to budgetary constraints. The French co-supervisor must then submit an application form on the European and International Partnerships Department portal. This must include the research subject, a presentation of the collaboration, the candidate's CV, the details of how the PhD thesis or master’s degree will be conducted and financed, and a reference from each supervisor. The agreement of the European and International Partnerships Department is essential for finalising the selection. European and International Partnerships Department communicates the final agreement, together with the allocated budget, to the internship supervisor and the Human Resources Department of the research centre hosting the student.
Please follow this link to submit an internship subject as part of this "targeted call" procedure. In the event of repeated visits, the researcher is invited to reapply each year.
