End to the long wait

Finally, after two years of rigorous construction work, the most awaited dining hall of VS hall of residence is ready, giving its boarders a reason to forget all their woes momentarily. It was inaugurated on 13th September and became functional on 16th September. In the meanwhile, team MM thought of bringing you all the details.

The total budget is about 4 crores. The building is two storeyed with a plinth area of 1343.43 square metres. It has 2 kitchen areas at present, but later a separate kitchen will be made and these will be used by the mess staff for accommodation purposes. The new kitchen when constructed, will also be two storeyed with its basement being used as a store room.

Finishing of the interiors has been done with a master’s touch. Flooring is complete with the touch of polished marble. Granite stones have been used for interior decoration. For the walls, ceramic glazed tiles have been fixed up to the window sills and oil bound distempering has been done for the part above it to keep the same scratch free for a good span of time. The roof has been given an inclined look, adding to the attractive look of the newest structure of the institute. Glass doors have been fixed at all the entrance and exit corners of the building.

As far as wash rooms are concerned, the mess has 4 washrooms, each containing 18 taps. For external finishing, the dining hall has been plastered with a weather coat.

The caterer has been allotted the contract in a temporary basis. This has led to an obvious improvement in the quality of food which the boarders of this hall usually get. On the first day of the opening, the food received a lot of positive comments. The service was top class. Starting from the professional attire of the mess workers to their amiable methods of interaction, all struck a sound note in the boarders’ hearts. On the other hand the boarders who had to dine in the old mess seemed to be struck with obvious jealousy. “The new mess is now in an experimental basis. There is every chance that the food quality will decrease once it is given a permanent contract. By the time we eat there the food quality may not be the same”, responds a visibly upset Subrat.

The present mess, which is the basement of this new dining hall and which was supposed to be used for parking bicycles, will continue to be used for dining purposes by block G and H boarders along with half of block B boarders, while the rest will use the new one and will be issued with Identity cards. This will continue for a semester after which they will be interchanged.
