‘Chef’s Food’ is what the new board at the top of the canteen building in the Institute reads. If you are wondering what we are talking about, it is more commonly known as Calorie among NITRians. It is one of the two canteens in the Institute area and one of the few hangout places inside the campus. Monday Morning spoke to the owner of the canteen to know more about it. Chef’s Food is in a ‘Public Private Partnership’ with OPOLFED (Apex Co-Operative Organization), under Ministry of F & ARD, Government of Odisha, which needs to pay the license fees and EMD (security money) to establish its food outlet inside the Institute.
When asked why Calorie should be preferred over Rengcol, the owner claimed that the quality of food is better there. He also boasted of more than 100 items in the menu. He said that 90% of the dishes mentioned in the menu are already available and rest will be introduced as soon as possible. As to the question why people still prefer going to Rengcol, he enumerates two basic reasons: unawareness about his canteen and the location of Rengcol, situated on the ground floor.
But the owner seemed optimistic and has plans to introduce even more snacks food at low prices, while maintaining its quality. An attractive board, enlisting all the food items available, has been set up beside the staircase leading to the canteen. He also plans to introduce a food coupon system to publicize his canteen as well as to increase the sale. Chef’s Food will also inaugurate an outlet at Civil Township very soon. He said the small size of the kitchen and unavailability of a proper bathroom were causing problems.
Finally, ‘Chef’s Food’ has a small message for the students, faculty and everyone who is a part of NITR: “Come and Taste”!
