Feel the Beat with Heartbeats

A painter paints on a canvas; a musician paints his feelings over silence.

For some, music may just be pure melody but for the members of Heartbeats, it’s a different world altogether. Heartbeats, the official contemporary fusion band of NIT, Rourkela finds its solace only when they’re with their instruments, jamming, trying to create something out of nothing.

Coming from different age groups, music got them together and music is what keeps them going. The main purpose of the band is to promote Indian classical music in an intermediate form by fusing it with Western styles and also to mutually grow as individual musicians as well as a band.
The band has extended its horizon in the recent years and has played not only classical music but also played contemporary rock and is slowly moving towards acoustic western music, RnB, as well.
The past year had been quite eventful for the band as a whole. The band participated in the Hindi Band competition of Mood Indigo 2k13 at IIT Bombay, performed for the Singapore exchange students and in the Convocation 2k14. The band also participated in Spring Fest 2014, IIT Kharagpur, and emerged as WINNERS of the Band competition and RUNNERS UP for the competition held during NITRUTSAV along with a few individual prizes from Shankar Mahadevan Academy. The band also organised a jamming competition, “Acoustica” and a drumming workshop, “Any Body Can Drum” during ISM 2014.
The victory at SF, IIT Kharagpur, is believed to be the turning point for Heartbeats; one win and the entire scenario changed for them. Reminiscing about their initial days as a band, they say, pre-Kgp and post-Kgp Heartbeats are completely different entities. A lot of colleges started recognising them and called them to perform in their functions. A reputed institute even asked the band members to judge their competition which they could not due to some unavoidable circumstances.

This year, the band is planning to participate in a lot of cultural festivals across IITs and NITs. Also, the band will be recording their self-composed songs if the band room is equipped enough as planned.
When asked what they expect in the inductions this year, we were told they’re anticipating a huge turnout. In the end, all kinds of arts are welcomed by the band and they encourage everyone even with the slightest talent to come to the inductions. The band welcomes the freshers and encourages them to overcome their inhibitions and present their talent without any hesitation.
