AASRA, the stalwart club of NITR celebrated its 10th foundation day on 26th January, thereby embellishing the eve of Republic day with patriotism. Founded a decade ago by Prof. K.R.Patel and Prof. G.K.Roy, the members of this club continue to work diligently for the upliftment and betterment of the society.
About 180 kids from 6 different workplaces comprising of Sector- 2 Slum, Sector- 21 Leprosy colony, Sector-6 leprosy colony, Sector- 5 Ambedkar basti, OSAP leprosy colony and Chhend Shishu Bhawan orphanage were heartily invited to be a part of this event. After being served with breakfast in the community centre, the kids were escorted to BBA to witness the event. The event lofted at around 10.45 am and continued till 2.00 noon. The event was graced by the presence of our reverent Director, Prof. S.K Sarangi, Father Bennichan K Peter (Chairman of CWS hospital), Father Thomas and sister Mary of CWS hospital, Prof .K .C Pati (Dean of Student Welfare), Prof Balasubramanian (BM dept.), Prof Thirugnanam (BM dept.), Prof. S.N. Alam (Metallurgy dept.) and the zealous children who were the main charm of the event. Adding to this were the inspiring performances with perfect synchronisation and eye catching moves by underprivileged kids that captured audience’s attention leaving them mesmerised. An exhibition of kids’ artwork and other exhibits were kept in front of BBA which also encapsulated some pictures of AASRA depicting their journey of 10 years. This was chased by the serving of mouth-watering lunch to all the members. Then was the time for felicitating the winners followed by the revelation of the names of the members of the new executive body of AASRA which are: Swadhin Kumar (President), Atul Kumar (Vice-President), Surya Rohith Kotla (Treasurer), Arunima Saha (General Secretary), and Sidhant Ranjan Sahu (Technical Secretary). Prof. Thirugnanam and Prof Balasubramanian eulogized the winners and the new post holders. Then it was time to bid farewell to the kids who then went back to their workplaces via institute bus.
AASRA is presently working on numerous side projects for the betterment of the society. It is also associated with organisations like: Goonj NGO, Kalyan Society of RSP, Saksham Eye donation club and Akshaya Patra Foundation. It has evolved itself into a loving and devoted family with over 120 active members including students, professors, alumni and some working people from Rourkela as well.
The event stirred the hearts of all its attenders and was a great success. AASRA had been, has and will continue to spread smiles among the under privileged.
