A Prequel to Race against Death

Your trial period of 1 minute is over. Now the round starts!” the host blared over the microphone behind the BBA.

A pretty little bot whirred out onto the formidable looking arena and whizzed past while everyone looked amazed. Yes, the kids created something that covered the entire arena of about 20 metres in a jiffy!

The rain gods failed to damp the spirits of the kids who thronged the SAC, then the verandah behind Bhubaneswar Behera Hall, for the Manual Bot event organized by Cyborg-the robotics and automation club of NIT Rourkela. The turnout was quite impressive, with 22 teams fighting for a place in the finals. The bots turned, twisted, fell down and even ran through the fire, yet they went on and on. With penalties for crossing the borders of check points to penalties for restarts (maximum 10), the participants did sweat it out and used up all their gaming skills, even in the sweltering humidity. The rain played spoilsport, with the arena being moved first from SAC to BBA and then back to SAC premises.

Nevertheless, the participants showed immense grit to cross valleys of sand and brunt of fire. Finally the team Vodka emerged victorious with the team Soparosh following closely behind. The event was a big hit, with friends and friends of friends cheering for the participants and groaning when the bot fell down from the arena.

Well kids! This was just a trailer for the main event “Death Race 3”, a flagship event of Innovision 2k14. All the best, because scarier stuff awaits!
