The Showdown in Surat: Compete-2015

The students of NIT Rourkela once again displayed their metal by giving a fabulous performance in Compete – 2015, the Inter – NIT sports event organized by SVNIT Surat from 3rdApril, 2015 to 5thApril, and 2015.

Games viz. Chess, Badminton, Basketball, Power Lifting, Weight Lifting and Best Physique were systematically organized by the host institute.

The Men Chess Team thrilled the stage by grabbing Silver in the final to give the institute another amazing moment to cherish. A total of 14 teams participated in the chess event and were shown the ground in five long rounds. Captain of the team, Rahul Lamba, won the Best Player of the Tournament to add cherry to the cake.
The girls Chess team missed the zenith by an inch and had to be satisfied with the fourth place.

Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Best Physique
Continuing the charm, Siva Kumar brought home a series of medals bagging Silver in Weight Lifting and Gold in Power Lifting and Best Physique individually. The all NIT Overall champion of champions’ trophy in Best Physique as well as the Runners Up in Weight Lifting was claimed by NIT Rourkela.

Badminton team showed a promising show till the quarter finals, however failed against the host team NIT Surat, hence getting knocked out of the tournament. The Badminton girls’ team also put forward a plausible performance both in the singles as well as the doubles but the results unfortunately were not in their favour.

Basketball, both Men and Women, spell bounded the audience with their brilliant performances.  The Men’s team reached the semifinals after a really long time beating the likes of NIT Warangal and NIT Trichy out of which the Trichy team were the defending champions. Beating the Trichy team to reach semifinals was a commendable effort. However the team lost to the dominant NIT Surat in the Semi Finals.
The girls’ team also showed a much better performance compared to their last endeavor giving a close fight to the Surat team. However the team got eliminated in the league round.

 Team Manager, Dr. P.K. Rout imparted his words of appreciation: 

  “The teams played diligently and made us proud. I expect more such achievements in the coming future.”
