One of the archive issues of MM focused on the development of a new design curriculum for the students of the Branch. The first meeting of Curriculum Development Committee (CDC) of Industrial Design Department was successfully held on 11th November 2013.The result of this meeting has been brought-to-effect from the academic year 2014-15.A new theory & lab course based on Art & Aesthetic Design have been introduced in the third semester exposing the students to the basics of Designing at a pretty initial stage& to introduce to the students towards the changes in modern designing.
As decided the skill sets required for both B.Tech and M.Tech students of the department would be enhanced by this step. One more add-up to the new course is KOM (Kinematics of Machines) in place of Thermal Engineering. However, Prof. Mohammed Rajik Khan has confirmed that new syllabus will allow Thermal Engineering Paper in future semesters for third semester students while for now they should be well-versed with the grass root level designing & also exposed to kinematics of machines.
According to Prof. Mohammed Rajik Khan, the Design studies can be divided mainly into 3 heads namely Robotics/Automation, Art, Design& Ergonomics & CAD/CAM/CAE. The new syllabus will introduce the students to the changes in modern designing. The new syllabus has an orientation towards Industrial Designing, defined in the direction of requirement of industries from the Industrial Designers, as compared to the earlier syllabus which was a combination of some subjects of different branches. The students will be able to grasp the concepts of Designing in a crystal clear manner through this syllabus. According to him, the concept behind introducing the Art & Aesthetic Design (Theory & Lab) in the same semester is to make them able to simultaneously simulate the designs into modern day practice. The syllabus aims that the students who pass-out from this branch should be able to design new & innovative products. Output of this subject in a precise manner should be a healthy knowledge in the fields of Product Design, Concept Design & Mathematical modelling which will be achieved through this new curriculum. As promised the new syllabus has come to effect from this academic year which will help designers to excel in future prospects& also a great achievement of the branch.
