Machining Marvels

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of NITR is one of the oldest departments to be established. It hasreformed drastically since its inception adapting to the changes taking place with the passage of time. This time too it has introduced ample improvements such as setting up new laboratories, installation of new equipments, improvising on the curriculum of the students and organizing seminars and workshops in order to cope up with the advancing technological revolution, impart world class knowledge to the students and widen their future prospects.

Equipment called Rapid Prototyping Machine has been installed recently. Rapid prototyping is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data. Construction of the part or assembly is usually done using 3D printing or "additive layer manufacturing" technology. Future plans to revamp the air conditioning, refrigeration, cryogenics and thermal equipments are down the pipeline and are set to be upgraded in the next 6-7 months. 4 new laboratories have been introduced to expose the students to practical applications of theoretical concepts. A product developing laboratory and 3 software laboratories namely, soft computing, system simulation and finite element method application and mechanical engineering have been set up. Workshops on ‘Optimisation’ and on ‘Deformation Criteria’ for industrial participants only have been organised and a conference on ‘Mechanisms’ is scheduled for October.

With curricular reforms occurring in all the departments, the mechanical engineering department too has come up with innovative changes.

Each course has been given an objective, outcome and their future prospects. This will enable the students to get a clear idea of the subject that they are going to pursue and shall be able to make intelligent decision that is not based on intuition

New courses have been introduced and existing courses have been modified to make them more efficient. Also, many additional professional electives are set to be offered to the students to increase their choice list and open new avenues. The major focus has been to create a fine blend of practical and theoretical knowledge keeping in mind the industry requirements and bringing the education level at par with the premier institutes such as the IITs.
