Commendable Accomplishments

The department of metallurgical and materials engineering has at all times harbored students of admirable caliber. New among them is Shashanka R. a PhD Scholar who has successfully procured not one but two awards lately.

Mr. Shashanka won the first prize in BEST POSTER PRESENTATION on Powder Metallurgy for NMD ATM 2014 organized by the Indian Institute of Metals at COEP Pune. It is one of the biggest and the most prestigious conferences of Metallurgy held in the nation, Shashanka grabbed the trophy and a cash prize of 5000/- by presenting a poster on MICROSTRUCTURE OF CORROSION STUDY OF SPARK PLASMA SINTERED DUPLEX AND FERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL competing with approximately one thousand endowed students.

Shashanka has also been awarded as the GRAND PMAI STUDENT AWARD for his paper on EFFECT OF Y2O3 ADDITION ON NON-LUBRICATED SLIDING WEAR BEHAVIOUR OF DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL that he presented at IIT Bombay. He is the first recipient of this award and has been conferred with a laudable amount of cash money along with the opportunity to travel to China at the last week of April for attending a conference on Powder Metallurgy. The award also includes a cash prize of 25000/- to guiding hand of GRAND PMAI STUDENT AWARD winner.  Shashanka is doing PhD under the supervision of Prof. Debasis Chaira, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He is very thankful to his guide Debasis Chaira for the immense inspiration and guidance in a right path throughout his PhD career.

Along with academic accomplishments, Shashanka has exhibited his competence in the sports field as well. He won the PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENTaward for Volleyball in both the SPORTS FIESTA held on 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 where he was a runner-up the first one and a prize-winner in the second one. He has also participated in several OPEN VOLLEYBALL tournaments held at Rourkela and has secured the PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT award there as well. Not only that, he received the same award at the INTER NIT Volleyball tournament that was held in the institute last year. This triumph has rejuvenated the determination of his team and they are working hard enough to bring home the trophy this year as well. A resident of Karnataka, Shashanka’s volleyball victory reaches to the days before he joined the institute. He has been playing the sport for the past 15 years and recollects a number of cherish able memories attached with it. He expresses his satisfaction of having witnessed the positive metamorphosis on the institute regarding the sport, both in dedication and resources.
