Newness or novelty has been intriguing and fascinating to man since the Neanderthal times. Novelty for us is excitement and exuberance, surprise and science, cheerfulness and joy, hope and happiness, boldness and buoyancy, positivity and passion. But men as we all are, novelty to us also means risk, unfamiliarity, uncertainty, fear, doubt and disturbance.  In the same token the old and the established stands for the ‘familiar and comfortable’, ‘knowledgeable and therefore able’, ‘mature and therefore trustworthy’, ‘rugged and therefore reliable’. But all this goes with accusations of ‘stagnation and staleness’ and ‘the slow and the stumped'. What is intended to express using all these adjectives is that the new comers to the institution represent the same hope and challenge as new players in a cricket team. And, ideally the seniors represent the mature bunch on which these freshmen could trust and depend on.

On 4th September 2015 at LA 114, the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering welcomed their newcomers for the session 2015-16 with open hands, open minds and above all open hearts. The event was a huge success where in every junior openly interacted with their branch seniors. Due to the power cut, the event started a bit late around 7.45pm and was over by 9.15 pm.  The fresher girls had prepared a melodious group song and a dance duet for their seniors. The boys, on the other hand performed a skit and a group song which was highly appreciated by the seniors. Based on their response to the questionnaire that was prepared by the sophomores, the finalists for the Mr. And Miss Fresher was decided. 3 boys and 3 girls respectively were selected for the personal interview which was conducted by the final years. After a tough competition and examination of their inter-personal skills, the results were announced. Partha Pritesh Dhal and Swetha were declared as Mr. and Miss Fresher 2015-16 respectively and Satwik and Aditi Biswas were declared as Runners up. The awardees were presented with goodies. Every fresher was presented with an emblem depicting “Welcome to BM-BT Department” as a souvenir. Everyone, including the professors, seniors and juniors had a great time together.
