The 4th National Symposium on Rotor Dynamics (NSRD) was organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Rourkela in association with the Vibration Institute of India from the 7th January to 9th January 2016. The event was based on the theme of “Developments in intelligent control issues in Rotor Dynamics”. Right from its inception, the symposium has been organised by several reputed institutes over the past 10 years, focussing on the major role that rotating components play in the current industrial scenario.
The event was inaugrated by Shri V.V.V. Prasad, an alumnus of the batch of 1981, and presently working as DGM, Coal Power Plant 1, Rourkela Steel Plant. The speakers and participants were formally welcomed by Prof Sunil Kumar Sarangi, Director, NIT Rourkela, Prof. J. Srinivas, Convenor, NSRD 2016 and the organising team. This was soon folowed by the felicitation of two senior professors namely, Prof R.K. Sahoo and Prof P.K. Ray, by Prof S.S. Mohapatra, HOD, Department of Mechanical Engineering, for their dedication towards their respective fields. The symposium was aimed at discussing various issues, with several invited talks by eminent speakers and also served as a platform for presentations on various developments in the area of rotor dynamics by several academic and industrial delegates. The next three days saw talks being delivered on varied range of topics including the talk by Prof R. Rzadkowski, Polish Academy of Sciences, on “Last Stage Steam Turbine Mistuned Bladed Discs” and Prof H. Roy, Assistant Professor, NIT Rourkela on ‘Viscoelastic studies in rotor dynamics’. Each of the talks were followed by a technical session wherein participants in the respective area delivered their respective papers. Around 20 participants, selected out of the 33 applied, were given a chance to deliver talks. They were later felicitated on the final day with certificates and mementoes.
Speaking on the overall conduct of the event Prof S.K. Behera, co-convenor, NSRD 2016 said,
The conference was a huge success with over 10 keynote speakers delivering talks. We are still taking baby steps, so it will take time to solidify our position.
With the next event scheduled to be hosted by IIT Patna in 2018, NIT Rourkela has certainly set a bentchmark that would be difficult to match. Team MM hopes that the NSRD achieves greater popularity in the upcoming years.
