On 9 April 2016, The Toastmasters Demo Meet was conducted in NIT Rourkela by the club Hourglass at the new senate hall from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Hourglass is the first club of Odisha to bring the students an opportunity to participate in an interactive session with Toastmasters International. The meet was targeted on orienting the students on how Toastmasters International works as a body and how the organization was going to be established in NIT Rourkela.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. They empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. By building up clubs worldwide, Toastmasters International helps them in achieving excellence in public speaking. After successfully operating clubs all over the world, it’s another step towards expanding the nexus.

Toastmasters Ayan, Smita, Saurabh and Amit from Infosys Bhubaneswar represented the organization. The seminar kick started with Toastmaster Ayan explaining the technical functioning of Toastmasters International and the various other aspects required for establishing the club in an institute. The first half of the seminar continued with the technical details and the various benefits associated with being a Toastmaster. After a small break the interactive session started where they gave a demo of how the Toastmaster session works. The ice breaker of the session, Toastmaster Amit gave an excellent speech and the speech motivated the members present in the meet to proactively participate. The session continued with Toastmaster Smitha giving out the table topics and the entire session was hosted by Toastmaster Saurabh. The various topics included first love, first crush, role model and other basic topics. 6 volunteers gave their extempore on the table topics and they were judged by the general and speech evaluators, Toastmaster Ayan and Siddharth Arugula respectively. Toastmasters International believes in constructive criticism and the students were shown how it is done aptly by the team. The session ended with few inspirational words by Toastmaster Saurabh. The meet concluded by the Club President Siddharth Arugula addressing the students and expressing his gratitude towards the toastmasters for taking out time from their hectic schedule and inspiring the audience.

With a little delay in the event and a few technical snags, it ended successfully with beaming smiles and inspired minds. Kudos to Hourglass for conducting the event successfully with high spirits.
