The Department of Mechanical Engineering has held many a short term courses in the current academic year. Ranging from STCARM, EAACM, SFMRE and AIVEF, these short term courses have been a boon for all the students who are an enthusiast in the field of Mechatronics, Artifical Intelligence and Condition Monitoring. These short-term courses have not only provided a very suitable platform for the students to garner knowledge about various fields and also, they get to interact with esteemed dignitaries in their respective prolific fields.

So, in the last weekend on 11th and 12th February, the department had a national level conference on Recent Advances in Industrial Tribology and Maintenance. The idea of having this conference was to have a fruitful discussion on the new generation of equipment & plants which are very capital intensive which require highest level of uptime required to realise reasonable returns in the market. The conference was also based upon Tribology, which has a substantial effect on the performance of equipment and the cost of maintenance of assets in manufacturing industries. The programme served as a national medium for interaction between renowned tribologists of the country, tribology practising manager from Indian industry and members from senior academia.

The conference also dealt with many other topics alongside the main theme which are furnished below:

  • Tribotesting
  • Lubricants and additives
  • Condition monitoring and maintenance
  • Materials
  • Rotor dynamics
  • Engine tribology
  • Simulation and modelling
  • Friction wear and surface engineering.

The participants had to register for the conference. They were asked to submit a one-page abstract indicating the title of the paper by 20th December 2016 and on being notified the full length of the paper was submitted by 10th January 2017. The registration fee for the participants is mentioned below:

  1. Student/Research scholars- INR 2000.
  2. Delegates from industry- INR 15000.
  3. Academia and Research Org- INR 3500.

The chief patron of the conference was Dr. Animesh Biswas, the Director of NIT Rourkela, the co-ordinator being Prof. Samir Kumar Acharya and Prof. Suraj Kumar Behera and the treasurer being Professor R.K Behera. All the professors of the department were invited to be a part of the conference. The accommodation was provided at the guest house. Professors from the Department of Mechanical Engineering from NIT Rourkela also delivered speeches in the conference.

Team MM congratulates Prof. Samir Kumar Acharya and all the members associated with the conference on successful conduction of the conference and hopes that the legacy of such intellectual discussion platforms is continued.
