Chemistry is a fundamental branch of science devoted to the study of the nature, properties, composition, and interaction of matter with one another. The Department of Chemistry, here at NIT Rourkela, stresses to provide its students with a strong foundation in chemistry and expose them to a breadth of experimental techniques using modern instrumentation. It aims to enlighten the students with the skills required to succeed in research projects, the chemical industry or professional school.

The Department of Chemistry offers Five-year Integrated M.Sc. programme with admission through JEE Mains, Two-year M.Sc. programme with admission through JAM, Ph.D. and M.Tech(Research) programme with admission through NITR’s Selection Procedure. The Department comprises 22 permanent faculties with different research areas and wonderful publications.

Infrastructure and Laboratories

The department, which is located on the second floor of the main building, has eight functioning laboratories for research and education purpose. It has acquired many advanced analytical types of equipment such as NMR, ESI Mass spectrometer, surface area analyser, FTIR, UV-Vis, HPLC, Potentiostat/galvanostat, Fluorescence spectrometer etc. A laboratory for glass blowing is proposed by which glass equipment can be fabricated. The department has received a huge sum of INR 2.2 crores from DST for a single crystal X-Ray diffractometer. It is also getting other high-end equipment like high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS).

Research and Projects

Being a department of pure science, research and projects form an integral part of it. Recently, the department has got 3 CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) sponsored projects. Otherwise, it has had continuous DST (Department of Science & Technology), DBT (Department of Biotechnology), SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board) sponsored projects. Every project has some research scholar working on it. Currently, the department has 75 research scholars.

Branch Placements

The placements of the branch have shown a steady growth. With the gradually increasing repute of the branch, the variety of job opportunities has also been on the rise. Students have often shown a keen inclination in pursuing careers in the education or research sector after graduation. Reputed government. Institutions and research centres have absorbed a major chunk of graduates of the department. The higher education scenario too has shown a steep improvement after the department gained a strong foothold, with a considerable number of students receiving admits in prestigious universities abroad and India.

According to Head of theDepartment, Prof. Saurav Chatterjee,

The courses should be such that there can be better placements. Pharmaceutical industries which boost the nation are where chemists are required but none of the pharmaceutical company comes during placements. To increase placements, we need to give proper training to graduates.

HoD’s Message to the Aspirants

Upon being asked for any message to the aspirants, HoD, Prof. Saurav Chatterjee commented,

Our country is lacking in research. We can’t develop anything because we lack in research. If we want to develop anything new, we have to concentrate on Research and Development (R&D). I think the time has come. We have the facilities, fundamentals, work effort and strength.  So, I request the freshers to concentrate on research.

Since its inception, the Department of Chemistry has been growing crossing the hurdles and is gradually progressing towards a brighter skyline.
