Setting its foot on the ground

Established in the year 2009, the Department of Mathematics has time and again proved itself to be one of the busiest departments of NITR. The department currently runs four academic programs namely five-year Integrated M.Sc. two year M.Sc. , M.Tech (Research) and a Ph.D. program. The total number of seats for students admitted in five-year Integrated MSc. program is 20 while that for 2-year MSc. program is 30. The department has 15 faculties and is currently headed by Prof. Kishore Chandra Pati.

Mathematics being the language of science and engineering has been a never dying subject for students exuberant in the science field. The Department. of  Mathematics was established at NIT Rourkela in view of creating human resources in the area of Algebraic topology, Functional analysis, Artificial Intelligence, Boundary value problem, category theory, Complex analysis, Differential equations, fluid dynamics, Number theory, Numerical Analysis and many other topics of inevitable importance in the field of research.

Research work being undertaken

The Department of Mathematics at NITR has undertaken some major research projects and organized numerous successful seminars as well. The Department currently has 6 sponsored projects. Some of the notable seminars organized by the Department are a seminar on “Optional control analysis on the malaria disease transmission mode” on 27th May 2015 by Mr. Bakare EA, Ph.D. thesis defense seminar on “Some generalizations and properties of balancing numbers” and a PhD. synopsis on “numerical solution of static and dynamic problems of some functionally graded structural members.” As of the previous academic year,  this department had undertaken three research projects with an allotted fund of fifty lakhs. The projects are funded by Department of Science and Technology, BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) Department of Atomic Energy.

The Department of Mathematics will be introducing three more degree programmes- MSc in Statistics, MSc in Mathematics and Computing and Ph.D. in Statistics.

 Placements and Prospects

As the course offered by the department very well caters to the needs of R&D sectors and IT giants; a major chunk of students are seeking employment in software giants. Apart from that, institutes like iBooks, Akaash have been the past recruiters for postgraduates from this department. Few others are opting for higher studies in IITs, IISERs, and foreign universities.

Thus, in a nutshell, the Department of Mathematics has experienced a huge leap in advancement within a very short span of 9 years. Although the department faces a crunch in space for multiple activities and even low faculty-student ratio, it has made its foundation quite firm on the grounds of NITR and has emerged out as a vital part of this institute.

Team MM wishes each prospective student and the department luck in all its endeavours.
