Let's Be Cleaned, Let's Be Civilized: A Tribute To Gandhi

On the event of 150th Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, NIT Rourkela celebrated the national cleanliness campaign, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan—2018 under “Ek Bharat Sreshth Bharat” scheme of Government of India. The theme of the event was “Say NO to plastic bags and save the Earth”. A team comprising of faculties, staffs, and students moved from the Community Center to Rourkela Club cleaning different places and spreading awareness about the mission.

Prof. Animesh Biswas, the Director, inaugurated the opening ceremony at the Community Center. Prof. Santosh Kumar Upadhyay (Registrar), Prof. Simanchala Panigrahi (Dean, Student Welfare), Prof. Snehasis Chakraverty (President, SAC) were also present in this auspicious occasion. Prof. Pabitra Mohan Khillar and Prof. Swapan Kumar Karak were the lead Nodal officers for this noble event.

Prof. Santosh Kumar Upadhyay quoted,

Let us take an oath that whether it is our hostel room, dining hall, academic classrooms, lawns or gardens, we must keep it clean and green. With this mission, we start this campaign, and I also expect a good contribution from all the students and staffs.

The event saw an enormous footfall of about 1000 participants comprising students from NCC, NSS, and PE. The event took a start at 6:00 AM. The participants were provided with T-Shirts, caps, gloves, and masks along with cleaning equipment. The campaign was launched with the cleaning of the Community Centre field. The team then moved towards Indo-German Chowk cleaning the Sector-2 market area in their way. The students contributed to spreading awareness about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by holding placards. The campaign ended at the Rourkela Club Chowk, Sector-20. On reaching the institute, the participants were greeted with refreshments.

Debadatta Dey, the former Chief Coordinator of NSS, NIT Rourkela expressed his satisfaction,

The turnout of the students and faculties was great. The organizing team did a fantastic job as we cleaned our society. I would rate this campaign as a grand success owing to the participation and results and hope towards successful Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
