Preps For The Young Innovators: The Panel Discussions and The Start-Up Hunt Challenge

Experiments and innovations in food have been carried out for generations. It is only the fearless who trust change and go for creative and innovative ideas. NIT Rourkela got the pleasure of having few such innovators as a part of the panel discussion held on food innovation at TIIR on 10th November 2018.
The panel discussion was constituted by Rohit Srivastava, who is the founder of FoodFindo, Raj Jha from Tamarind Sky, Srinivas Katakum, Founder of SLR and the well-acclaimed chefs Kayal and Rachit Kirtiman. The discussion started at around 3:00 PM and went on till 4:30 PM.
The discussion consisted of various technologies implied in food innovations, ideas of food innovation and the achievements and repercussions of innovations in food. The audience consisted of students from NITR as well as the participants of the innovation carnival. The crowd was enthusiastic about the discussion and flooded the panelists with questions out of sheer curiosity. The audience also constituted of the Dean (Students Welfare), Prof Simanchala Panigrahi, who posed questions on issues such as food wastage and artificial coloring and flavoring. The event ended by the guests advising the aspiring entrepreneurs about taking food classes to gain professionalism and always carrying out innovations which satisfy the taste buds of a large mass. They also told them how to be economical with tastier food and how to use social media and blogging to enhance food presentation. They also warned the audience of the adverse effects of processed foods.
The event was concluded by the handing over of the token of love to the panelists by Prof S Panigrahi. The package included mementos, shawls, and bouquets from Team Innovation Carnival.
A Start-Up Hunt Challenge was organized on 11th November from 10:00 AM at the TIIR Building which allowed 19 startups to come and pitch in their ideas by delivering a PowerPoint presentation in front of a panel of judges. The teams were divided among two panels which consisted of professors of NIT Rourkela and entrepreneurs. The participants were tested on the basis of the feasibility, application, and sustainability of their ideas which was followed by the final evaluation where three teams were selected. The top ten teams are slated to get incubation support from the FTBI, NIT Rourkela and a phase-wise funding of 1.5 lakh INR along with certificates of appreciation.
Another panel discussion by eminent entrepreneurs was scheduled to start at 10:00 AM but had a delayed start due to the last moment rescheduling and started at 2:30 PM. The panel was constituted by Dr. Lalit Kumar Manik, Co-Founder and President of Medtel Healthcare, Mr. Sitanshu Mishra, Founder and CEO/Managing Director of APOGE Consulting and Training Services, Prof Rajeev Kumar Panda, PIC, FTBI and the Convener of Innovation Carnival, Mr. Abhijeet Sahoo, Co-Founder of Fastech Fashions along with Mr. Amiya Samantaray from Phoenix Robotix. The discussion constituted of a round of questions from the audience comprising of budding entrepreneurs about various aspects such as the intricacies of marketing, business models etc. Abhijeet Sahoo and Amiya Samantaray then shared their success stories and how they toiled hard to make an idea a reality. The other guests then addressed the audience and shared their mantra of success and motivated them to think big.
