Year after year, Inquizzitive, the official quizzing club of NITR has proved its mettle and risen as one of the most successful communities of the institute. It’s not the first time that Inquizzitive is bringing laurels and glory to NITR but it certainly made an entire show of dominance at the ‘death zone’ of quizzing by maintaining a clean sweep at the Ranchi Regionals of Tata Crucible Campus Quiz.

On a fine Tuesday of 26th March 2019, six teams headed towards the Regional level of the prestigious Tata Crucible Campus Quiz held at St. Xavier’s in Ranchi. Tata Crucible since its inception year of 2004, has been the most sought after quizzing tournament for every quizzer. The Business Quiz organizes its annual edition of quiz tournaments for corporates and campuses respectively. As the official website says, the quiz aims to conduct a healthy and challenging competition among the sharpest minds of the country judging their knowledge in the genre of business.

The tournament starts with the mandatory preliminary rounds where the top four teams get a direct entry to the Finals. Much deservedly, the team comprising of Abhishek Patra and Swayambodha Mohapatra aced the round and concreted a place in the Regional Finals. Competing with the rest of the 500 students, three more teams of NIT Rourkela qualified for the ‘Super-Over’ round of the tournament.

As per the conventions, two teams out of the six competing teams in Super Over would join the four finalists for the Final Rounds. Along with a team from BITS Mesra, the team of Chinmay Mohanty and Dibya Prakash Mohanty clinched the top two positions in the Super-Over making their way into the finals.

After the Super Overs, the status of the competition seemed equivalent to the list below:

Super Over

  • BIT Mesra: Abhinaba and Abhyankar Joshi

  • NIT Rourkela: Chinmay and Dibyaprakash

  • BIT Mesra: Nishanth and Adnan Kalam

  • IIT (ISM) Dhanbad: Raghav Gupta and Aditya J

  • NIT Rourkela: Debabrata Malik and Sayed Ahmad

  • NIT Rourkela: Santanu and Satyaranjan Mallick

THE TOP SIX (FINALISTS)

  • IIT (ISM) Dhanbad: Tejas and Kanishk

  • BIT Mesra: Saket Jha and Sayan Choudhury

  • NIT Rourkela: Abhishek and Swayambodha

  • VSSUT Burla: Pratik Dash and Aditya Das

  • NIT Rourkela: Chinmay and Dibyaprakash

  • BIT Mesra: Abhinaba and Abhyankar Joshi

The city of Ranchi witnessed an interesting match where the six finalists of the tournament left no stone unturned in putting efforts to grab the Winner’s trophy. With the quiz master Giri Balasubramanium (popularly known as Pickbrain) throwing some puzzling questions, the tournament got more interesting and competitive. The final round consisted of four rounds where the team from VSSUT had a lead in the initial round. But subsequently, the two teams from NIT Rourkela with their genius answers ensured no other team could reach their vicinity. The score table clearly stated that the trophy belongs to NITR. The team of Chinmay and Dibya Prakash were at 28 points, slightly behind the team of Abhishek Patra and Swayambodha Mohapatra who were leading with a total of 31 points. The quizmaster read out the final question and the team of Swayambodha and Abhishek pressed the buzzer without any delay. And Voila! The tournament concludes with its two winners from NITR itself with the verdict:

  • WINNER: NIT Rourkela - Abhishek Patra and Swayambodha Mohapatra
  • RUNNER UP: NIT Rourkela - Chinmay Mohanty and Dibyaprakash Mohanty

It was an incredible tournament with NITR’s glorious victory. The team extends its gratitude to their mentor and senior Sampad Mishra for his constant guidance and encouragement. The Runner up Chinmay Mohanty expresses his joy:

The preparation process demands us to be on our toes with all current affairs involving companies, industries and business, cover the ongoing developments, dig out the history and achievements of corporate houses and have a thorough study about the products and notable campaigns in the business world.

He further added:

The regular club sessions of Inquizzitive along with the mentoring of alumni like Sampad Mishra groomed us in the right direction. Finishing the tournament as Runner up in the prestigious contest like Tata Crucible is a big deal. But the journey for us have started and we would continue the legacy of our seniors in the upcoming tournaments.

The Winner of the tournament, Abhishek Patra speaks:

The win at Ranchi was a matter of prestige for us as we had the heavy burden of carrying on our seniors' legacy of defending the crown. The entire NIT-R contingent was really well prepared through regular weekly club sessions as a result of which 3 teams of NIT-R qualified for the wildcard round and one of those teams(comprising of Chinmay Mohanty and Dibya Prakash Mohanty) managed to held their nerves and get through to the finals to join the team of Swayambodha and me. After that it was a crazy roller coaster ride with all 6 teams in the finals(comprising of IIT Dhanbad, VSSUT Burla and BIT Mesra) gave their all to clinch this crown. Even though one team from NIT-R has been consistently winning this competition since 2014 continuously, it was a clean sweep of both the podiums in Ranchi for NIT-R for the first time after 2016. As winners of the regional city round, I and Bodha are heading towards the Zonal Finals at Kolkata.

We also caught up with the teammate of the Winning team, Swayambodha Mohapatra where he shares:

This was NIT’s clean sweep after 2016. The team of Chinmay and Dibya nearly had us beaten and it was in the last question that we emerged as victors. I am proud that two more teams also qualified to the Super-over round which served as the complete dominance of NITR in the tournament. I can assure that the future of quizzing in NITR is safe and seems great!

One of the teammates of the Runner Up team, Dibya Prakash Mohanty summarises his overall journey:

This was my second Tata crucible, last year it was my first introduction to national level college quizzing and I could not make it to the stage but this year I was certainly more prepared for the quiz. It felt surreal competing alongside five of the best quizzing teams in the eastern region. Once the finals began, it was all instincts and fortunately, we got our first question right which gave us the confidence that in hindsight led us to the runners up spot. The best part was that we gave tough competition to our seniors and mentors as well. I don't have much recollection of receiving the prize because I was still in shock that we managed to pull off such a performance and win the runners up prize against a line up of quizzers who were far more experienced than us.

He further added:

As for my preparation, I have been extremely blessed to have seniors like Swayambodha Bhai, Abhishek Bhai and Prathamesh Bhai who constantly guided me and my club members in preparing for each and every quiz and the dedication of my fellow club members in conducting regular quiz sessions to brush up our skills. My partner Chinmay has always encouraged me and provided his quizzing experience to me constantly which has actually helped me improve immensely.

The Winners, Swayambodha and Abhishek bagged a humongous cash prize of 75,000 INR and the Runners Up Chinmay and Dibya Prakash won a cash prize of 35,000 INR.

The team of Swayambodha Mohapatra and Abhishek Patra qualified for the Zonals of Tata Crucible Campus Quiz 2019 to be held at Kolkata on 31 March 2019. Team Monday Morning congratulates Inquizzitive for their stellar victory at the tournament and wishes all luck for the upcoming ones.
