Since NIT Rourkela was established, the Mechanical Engineering department has been a viable option for upcoming freshmen. The department not only nurtures them academically but lays the foundation for success by helping students develop personality traits that give them an edge over their peers from different institutions. Not only are these traits beneficial to the students in their professional life but in personal life as well. The department boasts of faculty strength of 30 and every year sees around 90 freshmen in the undergraduate course.

Being an institute of national importance, Mechanical department of NITR promises opportunities to the students over their academic period at NIT Rourkela. The students of Mechanical Engineering department attain specialization in understanding the fundamentals of mechanical system, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and instrumentation. The branch provides students with ample opportunities in different fields to identify and nurture their potential to become the best version of themselves.

To ensure NITR produces brightest minds in today’s world where practical knowledge is a must, the department has equipped its labs with modern types of machinery and laboratory facilities. These prove to be very essential to carry out research work under professors with proper care and efficiency. The most notable research areas of professors include aerospace engineering, material and surface engineering, advanced machining processes, thermal engineering and its application, fluid engineering, refrigeration and cryogenics engineering, basic manufacturing and micro manufacturing, machine design and vibration analysis, robotics and mechatronics, statistical quality control, optimization and operation management. The notable sponsors for research include SERB, DRDO, DST, and ISRO. Working in all these fields under experienced professors, students get all the exposure and experience required to excel in their fields.

The college not only fulfils its academic duties but also makes sure that the students are well prepared for the industrial and research world. The placement scenario of mechanical engineering students at NITR is quite bright where companies such as Vedanta, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Maruti-Suzuki, Bajaj recruit the qualified students.

.The current Head of the department Prof. Dayal Ramakrushna Parhi had the following to say:

We are looking to expand the new specialization courses and make them a part of regular MTech programs as a part general mechanical engineering degree. We will also be initiating new research work on Nanotechnology and other fields and try to bring in more opportunities for our students to give them more hands-on training.
