The course focuses on the engineering design, determining the reliability of the product, at the same time considering the ergonomics of it. It requires the use of mechanics and giving the product an appealing look and provide comfort for the customers. The course deals with 70% of core design – ergonomics, aesthetics, interaction, animation, graphics design, and 30% of mechanical modules such as the kinematics of machines, machine design, the strength of materials, workshop.

Their research work mainly revolves around Ergonomics, Product Design, and Design for manufacture. Under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), two projects are being carried out namely the Robotic Welding System and Electromagnetic Welding System. There are two more projects, which are managed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST): Agricultural Drone System and Underwater Acoustics. Those are a few of the current projects costing over 1 Crore Rupees. Many research papers from this department are published in the highly regarded Science Citation Index (SCI). This contribution is made not only by the faculty members but also by the PhD and M.Tech students and many of them have been the award winners for Best Paper Awards for their innovative ideas.

Along with the research and project works, they have provided Management Development Problems (MDP) to several industries, a few of them being to Vizag Steel. Moreover, recently the 1st International Conference on Innovative Product Design and Intelligent Manufacturing System was held by the department.

Talking about the placement scenario, many well-known companies and industries such as TATA Motors and Mahindra, visit the institute offering various job opportunities. Many students opt for higher education, after completion of  MTech or B.Tech here and continue their education at prestigious institutions like IIT Mumbai, IISC Bangalore, IIT Delhi, NTU, a few to mention.

This department is combined with Mechanical Engineering currently taking the support of the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department. Thus they plan on recruiting more professors to reduce the burden on the current faculty members as well as provide students with professors of diverse specializations.

Talking with the Head of Department, Prof. B.B.V.L. Deepak said,

I feel very comfortable here, both with the students and other colleagues. Although mainly students with a relatively low rank opt for this field, they have sharp minds that will shape the future of society. Also, I encourage more student-faculty interaction, benefitting the students both academically and personally.

For an aspiring designer, the Department of Industrial Design is a great option.
