Since the utilization and management of mineral resources is one of the important concerns of integrated and sustainable mining development, the Department of Mining engineering at NIT Rourkela accomplishes its goal on similar lines. was established. Currently, Mr Debi Prasad Tripathy is serving as the head of the Department. The total number of faculty members sums up to 8 currently, the department offers B.Tech(4 years/dual degree), with an intake of 35 in B.Tech (4 years) and 10 in B.Tech (dual degree).
Mining Engineering is the discipline that involves the practice, theory, technology, and application of extracting and processing minerals from a naturally occurring environment. The demand for mining engineers has thus become very important with increasing call for technology innovation and safe mining. The department of mining engineering at NIT Rourkela specializes in mining Technology, Geomechanics and Strata Control, Mine environment and safety Engineering, Clean Coal technology, Mine Planning, Mie surveying, Mining Geology and Hydrogeology.

To perform physical experiments, the branch is well equipped with modern machines like DTA, AAS, Computer Controlled Compression Testing Machine ,Ultrasonic Testing Machine, Rheometer, Gas Chromatograph, Digital Bomb Calorimeter etc. and the department does not lag behind with the latest computer facilities like Surpac, Flac2D&3D, Udec, LabVIEW, Ventsim, Whittle, ArcGIS etc.

The department has taken up various research works in various fields. Major fields of research in which projects have been undertaken by the faculty and the students include coal mining technology, fly ash management, Slope Stability, Spontaneous Heating of Coal and Mine Fires, Modelling of Coalbed Methane, Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment, and Mine Systems Reliability. The department currently has two ongoing sponsored projects “Estimation of Aerosol Optical Depth(AOD) from regions in India and development of the statistical model for prediction of particulate matter concentration from AOD.” and “Fist programme” sponsored by CSIR and DST respectively.

The placement has been remarkably impressive this year where the students were recruited in various top-notch companies. Some of the companies visiting the campus are Tata Steel, Coal India Limited, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Lafarge etc. The students have performed extremely well in examinations like GATE. In GATE 2019, three students secured under 100 ranks with AIR 8, AIR 13 and AIR 41. The department has also witnessed a bunch of students opting for higher education.
On asking about the current status of the department, the HOD states:

We are getting more funds now and are planning to develop the infrastructure of the department and to enhance lab facilities. Our future plan is to increase the number of R&D and industrial projects and getting more number of research scholars in the department.
