On the 14th of September, the institute witnessed its best swimmers clash for glory in the annual open swimming competition. The inauguration was done by the
Director Dr Animesh Biswas, who was accompanied by the SAC president Prof.Seemita Mohanty. The event started at 6 PM, although it was supposed to start by 5:30 PM.

There were a variety of events for the participants and also to keep the crowd entertained. There was heavy competition between the students, staff, institute team and the children. The institute even conducted an under-12 tournament for the kids. To set things rolling the event was flagged off with the most anticipated event- the 50 meters boys freestyle. This was followed by other events.

There was a good turnout in the audience as well, ranging from friends to family. Team MM had an opportunity to have a chat with the boys and girls team captains of the institute swimming team and this is what they had to say:

The event was conducted successfully, thanks to great coordination among the team members, secretaries and anchors. Annual Open Swimming competition was conducted with a dual aim. The primary being to increase awareness amongst all NITians on the importance of a fit body and a fit mind as swimming is one of the best sport to stay fit. Another aim was for the winners, as their excellent performance coupled with specialised training will catapult them to next level where they will have the honour of representing NIT Rourkela in All India Inter-NIT Swimming competition and other sports fests.

- Ritvik Verma, Boys captain

Annual open swimming competition 2019 was a success. Though the participation this year was less than the previous year. We expected more participants. Some events of staffs and campus children got cancelled due to lack of participation. This event gives us a glimpse of the upcoming inter-college meets. This year the team is very strong and we expect medals in spardha and inter nit. The event was conducted smoothly by our team members and of course the student representatives of sports society.
