The Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of this Institute. Growing steadily, today the department runs its Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral programs in Mathematics. In addition, research is also carried out in interdisciplinary areas of science and technology thereby contributing to the vibrant academic ambience of NIT Rourkela.

Introduction To The Department

Department of Mathematics focuses on providing a comprehensive curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels that contain pure, applied, and computational aspects of mathematics. The department boasts of a total of 19 passionate professors who are actively involved in Editorial Boards of various journals, and various national-level academic and administrative committees. All faculties hail from reputed institutes across India such as IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, and Delhi University, and have gained competence in their various fields of research.

Apart from sharing programming and algorithm courses with the B.Tech students, they have multiple dedicated labs each semester to solve mathematical and statistical problems, soft computing, and numerical methods using MATLAB and R.

Research Works

Research activity is greatly promoted in the department. Various Sponsored projects are taken under DST under the Ministry of Science and Technology in India, CSIR, NBHM, DRDO.

Some fields of research are Artificial Intelligence, Functional Analysis, Algebraic Topology, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Number theory, Soft Computing, Machine Intelligence, and Numerical Analysis

Career Prospects

Most students do their summer internships and final year projects in the field of Analytics and Machine Learning. Internships are mandatory in the 4th year of the program and scholars prefer research internships in institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and IISc.

The 2019-20 placement season witnessed the maximum CTC of 30lpa and an average CTC of 9.87lpa having 50+ companies on board. Students bagged offers in many reputed companies such as Goldman Sachs, Quantiphi, Udaan. The education sector played a major role, by providing maximum job offers in the department, from leading coaching platforms such as BYJU's and Aakash Institute.

Some of the students are pursuing Ph.D.s at top reputed universities of India and abroad by securing top ranks in CSIR NET and various other exams.
