Civil engineering department in NITR is one of pioneer branch of the college established in the year 1961. The Department offers students courses in B.Tech, and PG in specializations like Geotechnical, Structural, Water Resources, Transportation and Environmental Engineering. With a vision to become frontier in civil engineering education and research, which will serve the society with the most sustainable infrastructure and superior environmental health branch has been growing every year.

Programmes Offered and Curriculum

After the dual degree courses were discontinued from the academic year 2017-18, currently, the department offers B.Tech (4 years) and M.Tech courses, with an intake of 80 students in the B.tech batch, 100 students in the P.G courses (20 students in each specialization), PhD and Research scholars mounting to nearly 50 each year. Professor Chittaranjan Patra is the current Head of the Department, forming the core of the department with 30 other excellent professors who are dedicated to their specializations. The department is also well equipped with 8 laboratories for giving you the best practical experience before you land on the field. The different laboratories are Structural Engineering Lab, Material testing Lab, Computational Lab, Geotechnical Engineering Lab, Highway and concrete Lab, Hydraulic Machine Lab, Hydraulic and fluid mechanics Lab, and Environmental Engineering Lab.

Prospects

Coming to the prospects of a future career, students opt for various research-based and Industry based Internships in both International and National domain. The placement scenario of the dept. this year has been remarkable with an adequate number of job offers from companies like L&T, Tata Project, KEC International, Axxela Advisory Services LLP, Oracle labs, Bridge & Roof Co. and Affine analytics to name some. Students also go forward for higher education in premier institutes including foreign institutes as well.

Research Work

The broad area of the current research focus of the Department includes liquefaction and landslide remediation, ground improvement, vibration control, composite structures, seismic evaluation and retrofitting, river hydraulics, remote sensing and GIS, pavement design, transportation planning, wastewater management, air pollution, and solid waste management. Some of the recent projects of the department include projects on development in the probabilistic model for the failure analysis of bonded fibre reinforced plastic composite adherence under SERB, fly-ash and slag in road pavement and sensitivity of Railway footbridges among others. The department has successfully held important webinars and conferences in the current pandemic environment under the sponsorship of TEQIP-3, some of them are RDGE-2020, ATE -2020, and RTRCES-2020

Alumni

The department has produced some of the most eminent engineers who went on to work towards the greater good and make their alma mater proud of them. Some of the notable alumni of the dept. are Major General Ramesh Chandra Padhi (Additional Director General, Indian Army), and Ajit Samal (VP, Vedanta Group) among others.

Message from the HOD

The current Head of the Department Professor Chittaranjan Patra has the following message for the freshers:

Our department has developed to a massive extent in recent years with an aim to provide quality education and have quality research, we have made an admirable number of calibre research publications. Along with our department having one of the strongest Industry-Institute Interaction with major Industrial consulting projects, it also produces the highest IRG (Institute Resource Generation)with major industries like Vedanta, TATA Steel, SAIL, HINDALCO, Indian Railways, IDCO, Coal India and many others. Our Industry has major career prospectus in the Government Sector with gradual improvements in the private sector. I wish all the students luck in their future journey in this distinguished branch.
