Established in 2010, the Department of Industrial Design provides the students with the knowledge and skills in the field of design, closely related to engineering mechanics. The students are taught to look at products from various perspectives and apply design thinking to come up with functional and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

Opening And Closing Ranks

For the undergraduate course, the department has 40 seats out of which 19 are reserved under the Home State quota, and the remaining 21 seats are for students from other states (Other State Quota). The faculty consists of six reputed professors who are adept in their respective fields. The opening and closing ranks in the seventh round of JOSAA counselling for the previous year were as follows:

Opening Rank (Home State)

Closing Rank (Home State)

Opening Rank (Other State)

Closing Rank (Other State)

Research Works

The research work mainly revolves around Ergonomics, Product Design, and Design for manufacturing. The M.Tech and PhD scholars are actively involved in research work, which is published in the reputed Science Citation Index (SCI). PhD scholars have even been awarded reputed awards like the Ganesh Mishra Memorial Award by The Institute of Engineers (India) a few times. The research scholar award has also been given by the institute to the Department scholars a few times. Further, the faculty members are actively involved in sponsored research projects of about two crores which also bring in new equipment in labs. The focus of the branch is chiefly on the engineering design keeping the ergonomics and aesthetics in mind. The course also focuses a bit on the mechanical aspect of bodies. Overall, the department aims to build an understanding of core design fields including ergonomics, aesthetics, interaction, animation, and graphics design among others.

In addition to this, the department is actively involved in Industry Collaborated Management Development programs- twelve in the past three years. The department conducted an international conference last year and this year they will conduct a national conference on product design and intelligent manufacturing systems.

The department has also been doing very well in placement terms with an increase in recruitment by core design companies. Disney+Hotstar, Zomato, Lollypop Design Studio, BYJU’S, Newgen software, Think Design offered jobs with design profiles. Companies like ADP India, ITC Infotech, Capgemini, and Tredence among others recruited in non-design sectors. The department also offers excellent prospects when it comes to higher education. Several students go on to pursue a Master of Design (M.Des) degree in various IITs and NIDs (National Institute of Design).

Another major improvement is that the department, currently functioning from the Bio-Medical building, will soon be shifted to the new Mechanical building. This has led to the addition of new labs such as the Human Simulation lab, Automation lab, Rapid Prototyping lab, Product Design, and Development lab in addition to the six labs which were present earlier. The department is in the process of procuring various equipment for these labs.

Message From Head of Department

The Head of Department, Prof. B.B.V.L. Deepak, wishing the best for the new batch of 2020, said:

Most of the B.Tech members are placed well in core design industries. Besides this, they have succeeded in design-related exams like CEED and have been admitted in reputed M.Des programs at IIT Guwahati, NIDs, and so on. M.Tech students have been admitted for Ph.D. programs in IITs. I wish the new batch all the best and hope they have a bright future like those who graduated from our department.

Team Monday Morning wishes the prospective designers who’d be joining the branch the very best for their future endeavours.
