Established just a few years more than a decade ( 2007 ) back the Departments of Biomedical and Biotechnology engineering has come through leaps and bounces to what it is today for NIT Rourkela.

The department offers a total of 72 seats(including supernumerary), 36 for each stream for the undergraduates under the B-tech Programme. A cadre of 21 faculty members is appointed for carrying forth the department. Along with the B-Tech programmes, the department also offers M-Tech (two years) and PhD Programmes to the graduates.

What Is Biotechnology And Bio-Medical Engineering?

Biomedical engineering is the application of the principles of engineering to biology and medicine. The branch requires expertise in surgical, health maintenance and care systems performance, curative procedures and prosthesis.

Biotechnology means any application of technology that uses biological systems or living organisms to create or modify products or processes for a specific use.

Major Achievements And Notable Research Works Undertaken

Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering department, NIT Rourkela is presently having 20 on-going research projects with total funding of 707.17 Lakh Indian Rupees. The department has also procured an ample number of high-value projects from 

  • SERB Imprint (96.47 Lakhs, 65 Lakhs)

  • FIST program (115 Lakhs)

  • National Agricultural Science Fund (62.78 Lakhs), etc. 

Almost every faculty in the department has at least one on-going research project.

PROSPECTS

With a steady increase in the influx of companies visiting the campus for recruitment, the job opportunities have increased marginally over the years. Core, as well as non-core companies, visit the campus. However, the number of core companies visiting the campus is limited. In the region of non-core, the companies visiting are mainly analytics, coaching institutes and IT companies. Some of the companies that visited the campus this year are Tresvista, Technoculture, Capgemini, Citi and many more.

Apart from placements, students also pursue higher studies( M.S. and PhD) from India as well as abroad. Subhashree Pagal, a final year student of the Department of Biotechnology secured an All India Rank(AIR) 91 in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE),2020. In the year 2018-19, Soumya Pratap Tripathy, a scholar of Biotechnology department bagged an admission letter from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Message From the Head of Department:

The Head Of the Department, Prof. A. Thirugnanam, under whose guidance the department is making commendable strides, says:

We have recently recruited new faculties to strengthen the areas of bio-instrumentation, medical electronics, biomechanics and bio-transport, and also there will be more professional electives to choose, for the students. We are trying to capture multi-institutional collaborative research projects, and with FR loan we will strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate teaching laboratories.

With the further strengthening of core academics and research facilities, the department of biotechnology and biomedical engineering is going to get bigger and better with more research initiatives in the field of biological sciences.
