The Department of Civil Engineering, established in 1961, has been producing Engineers and Leaders for the country. It has played a significant role in nation-building for years by improving the quality of basic needs of human civilization and taking care of the natural and humanly built environments with planning, designing, construction, operation and maintenance

Courses Offered-

The Department provides degrees in B.Tech (Civil Engineering), M.Tech. (Water Resources / Transportation / Structural / Geotechnical Engineering) and PhD in Civil Engineering.


The placement scenario of the dept. has been remarkable with an adequate number of job offers from companies like L&T, GAIL (click here), TATA Projects, KEC International, Axxela Advisory Services LLP, ZS Associates (click here)Bridge & Roof Co. and Affine Analytics, to name some. Students do go for Higher Studies and have been successful in various examinations like CAT (click here to know about the CAT Qualifiers).

Government Examinations & PSUs:-

The branch has a plethora of scope in the Government and Public Sector Unit sector. After cracking Engineering Services Examination (conducted by UPSC for Indian Engineering Services), GATE, State Engineering Services, one can directly serve the Government and various PSUs in prestigious positions.

Mode of admission & Seat Matrix:-

The intake of students happens through JoSAA/CSAB (JEE Mains), DASA, ICCR, etc. Through JoSAA (JEE Mains), the Department has a seat matrix of 90 seats (including female supernumerary seats) for Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering.

Facilities & Research Works:-

The Department is well equipped with Computational, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Highway & Concrete, Hydraulic Machine, Material Testing & Structural Engineering Laboratories to impart top-notch practical knowledge to the students. An ample amount of research work has been happening in the branch in Concrete Materials, Earthquake Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, etc.

Various sponsored projects funded by the Science and  Engineering Research Board (Department of Science & Technology, Government of India), Government of Odisha Larsen & Toubro have enhanced the branch’s worth.


The branch has 31 faculty members who are highly experienced in their fields and quite student-friendly to impart genuine knowledge to the Department’s students. Someone taking admission in the branch will indeed have a cherishing experience learning from the Professors.

Prominent Activities and Achievements:-

  • In collaboration with ICE: UK NITR chapter, the CEST club had a mega-event SMARAK: 2021, organised from the 14th-16th May 2021. The event was a success with the overwhelming participation of 450+ from across various IITs, NITs, GFTIs, and other reputed institutes across India(click here to know about the event)
  • Glorifying the diamond jubilee year celebrations, NIT Rourkela hosted the 25th International Conference on "Hydraulics, Water Resources, and Coastal Engineering" from 26th - 28th March 2021. The conference, organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, was conducted under the Indian Societies for Hydraulics (ISH) aegis. (click here to know about the conference)
